ParticipantThose that were there in Sept may remember the presentation from Robert Alexander about EEEsafe and the proposed competent persons scheme ,you may also recall the apathy in the room for it.
The following email was received yesterday and I thought it needs to be in here ,I have had a couple of email conversations with Graham Dixon over this, the last one being that Government (His words) was checking the viability of the scheme.
I know you will be busy with the upcoming meeting but I thought I would get in touch and let you know the latest on EEESafe and why we will are having a display stand.
Essentially the EEESafe Competent Person Scheme will launch the same day as the show – February 8th.
It was planned to start this month but you know what happens to such deadlines.
We hope that having a stand with printed information and the ability to talk directly with someone about it will help get the message across (rather than a long winded presentation).
Dave Coombes would like us to include, “Supported by DASA” and I thought that the WTA / UKW could consider asking for the same but we would need to know quickly as time is short for printing the material.
Those that choose to join EEESafe (and comply with the requirements) will be issued an ID Card. We are not looking to crowd out the ID Card, but perhaps DASA and WTA / UKW could be included.
It is likely that the scheme will not pay for itself as we are only looking to charge £45 per registrant and marketing, admin and other associated costs will make short work of this.
So part of the reason for contacting you and DASA is to ask if there could be any contribution towards as an off set for the ID Card.
Don’t worry much about it for now if it’s a problem, but I thought we should ask anyway as hopefully we all want the Competent Person Scheme and recognition for the those in the sector.
We are also getting a Letter of Support from DASA and Phil Dill (who is very keen and looks to be the first to enrol his engineering force), as the Government have come back to us about the EEESafe Plan and they feel letters of support would add weight. I will also be providing one under the Dixon Training banner. Perhaps WTA / UKW could once again find the time to write something on the lines of –
“The WTA / UKW fully support EEE Safe as a ‘Competent Persons Scheme’ in order that consumers will recognise a strong brand that consumers will embrace and understand, whilst being assured of Technical Ability, Safety in Appliance Repairs and mindful of our environment as we engage in Waste Prevention through the Green Skills held by the sector. This is long overdue and we are looking forward to promoting this to the sector and the wider community.”
Feel free to change/edit, but let me know ASAP.
Govt is looking for more indication of support, so although we’ll press on regardless, if we can get any further letters in the next few days, we may as well submit them.

M07884 063462There are a few things with which I have an issue
1. There is an impression being given that our industry is crying out for a competent persons scheme which I disagree with .
2. I just cannot see how this will work as a business model.
3. I dislike having something bounced on us i.e will we put some money there way and can we do a letter of support.
4. I have the impression that a problem is being created so that a problem can be solved to someone else’s agenda ?Thats my opinion what do you think …

I am doing ID cards for £15
I seem to remember a version of this back in my DASA days with Chris Hayter in the hot seat. Didn’t work then, won’t work now.
IMHO none of these schemes will work until Gov legislates to it like Gas Safe.
Let DASA steal the lead on it I say

And this arrives today
As you know I like to keep you informed on the EEESafe project and thought that you would be interested in considering allowing aspects of the EEESafe site to mention that EEESafe supports the WTA Code of Practice and as such would expect those registering with EEESafe to agree and abide by them too. It could help increase awareness and membership for the association.
We have our own code of practise why would we want to be associated with theirs? Increase membership ?DASA has already confirmed that it wishes to be associated with it and we would be more than pleased to include the same reference and requirement for the WTA. See my earlier post bearing in mind that those supporting it are on the DASA committee
You can check out the relevant section at – http://www.eeesafe.com/codeofpractice.html
If you are in agreement (or not) it would help if you could let me know as soon as you can – no commitment we just want to stress to all concerned that we wish to include all in the EEESafe project. Diplomacy Lawrence
The additional meeting we had with Ian at Coventry was most welcome as it clearly showed to those bodies that there is genuine concern and common ground within the sector for improvement but feel hampered by the ineptitude of those outside the sector that do not understand the real issues of those within it. What I actually said was that if government didnt get its finger out we would have no independent appliance industry in ten years – this in no way was in support of EEESafes stance re their project
I won’t drawl on other than to say that like Ian we all need to see action as opposed to rhetoric and to this end we are issuing some interesting press releases which I feel would be of interest to all in the trade. Look forward to reading them
You can find them on the website or better still you could contact Robert via email r.alexander@eeesafe.com and he will be more than willing to provide you with the information. (We thought it was time to fire a few shots across the bows of DEFRA, WRAP etc as being helpful and patience for so long has not appeared to result in anything positive – especially in relation to PAS 141). My position on PAS141 is that it was developed as a stage 1 standard which will be improved as we go along – also best not to shout to loud about how crap it is when government supported and paid for its inception
I will let Ian fill you in on his meeting with them.
