Hi, just a quick question regarding fridge freezers.

My freezer has too much ice on the top and 2 silver metallic trays, I have been told whatever I do do not put water on the ice! especially on the 2 silver metallic trays since this has electricity running thru it and it can kill the fridge ?

I have just seen a video showing best way to defrost a fridge and the lady rubs a hot wet cloth over the top and then the metallic trays, so I must be mistaken ?

Any advise is helpful, thank you.

Best way is to just let it defrost naturally.

Second best is to use a hairdryer on a lower heat.

Any other way, liable to cause harm.

Is it 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure any other way would cause harm?

Issue is for past 10 years we have really been unable to defrost it that much, since we can’t be placing the frozen goods too long in a cooler.

hot watered cloth being tabbed onto the ice directly would kill the ice 10x faster or hot water! in an ideal world I would switch if off for a day or 2 but not possible with food inside.

    Re: Question about defrosting freezer

Generally, yes. Any other way risks harm.

To be honest, the best thing to do is to run the freezer down prior to defrosting it and essentially accept that whatever is in there when you do defrost is lost or cannot be refrozen without the risk of illness. Unless of course you can transfer it to another freezer.

If you use water then, on some machines, you risk water getting into electrical components and that usually doesn’t end well.

What’s the problem here? A hair dryer would complete the job in 5 minutes….get on with it, stop messing about….damp cloths indeed…whatever next?

hair dryer heard that can damage the electrical components !

    Anyhow am trying the damp cloth trick here;

    http://www.wikihow.com/Defrost-a-Freezer

its one of the most popular wikihelp/google searched options to defrost the freezer…

using the boil of hot water is working, guess over time it will eventually work.

Thanks for all tips, id bet hot water/hair dryer and all these other things are fine just have to be careful and not over do it, will soon find out when we switch on the fridge again !

That is the most appalling series of fridge defrost ‘tips’ I have ever seen! But wikihelp is full of this sort of drivel so no surprises there. For starters check out the filthy cloth the person is cleaning the shelves and door seal with. Using a water spray to rinse off the inside the cabinet and lining the floor with newspaper to catch the water spilling out. Like the sort of article found in a post war copy Women’s Realm magazine, an insight into what they used to do 50 plus years ago. Long, long ago even before Kim & Aggie started teaching the bloody obvious to totally confused…!

Whilst a bowl of hot water still holds true these days, the hot damp cloth is a certain no no. Hygiene is a prerequisite and filthy towels and dishcloths should NEVER be used. Instead use disposable J Cloths and clean with anti-bacterial spray, wiping over all plastic shelves, cabinet and door lining and the magnetic door seal. Rapid accelerated defrosting can be safely done with a hand held hair dryer on low heat setting provided the operator uses it as one would to dry hair, that is moving in around and not concentrating the airflow in one place or near to plastic surfaces for too long.

    Re: Question about defrosting freezer

I have used the hair dryer method for over 30 years without any problems whatsoever.

From a safety point of view please remember that electricity and water don’t mix. Please use extreme care when using the hair dryer around the melting ice.
    I use this method also.

    Re: Question about defrosting freezer

Find carboard boxes to put food in it will be fine for a couple of hours, especially this time of year if you put it outside, hairdryer on full hold 6 inches or so away from ice, as said earlier get stuck in,no metal or sharp objects, all over in 3o minutes or less, dry out with old towel.
35 years of using hair dryer no problems,as I go balder it’s the only decent run out it gets 🙂 !
