Hello to all on the forum, this is my first post!

I have been using a hotpoint 7844 dishwasher now for 10years, it was in the house when we moved in. It has been a brilliant machine, totaly reliable and cleans well. The only thing that ever went wrong was the soap dispenser flap would not stay shut but deft use of a small file sorted that out.

Sadly the machine has now developed a fault….

When the machine is started the waste pump runs as normal for 30s or so and then if I remember rightly it should start filling with water, it does not and the timer dial does not move from this position.

Dishwashers are new to me but I am pretty handy and I learn about and repair pretty much anything so I don’t want this machine to beat me!!

I have checked the water in solenoid valve coil (approx 3.9Kohms) so I presume that is ok, then I checked to see if it was receiving power (I presume from the timer) it does not appear to be getting any power. The machine appears to have a float/fill switch on the side on the strange moulded thing on the side, the float is free and the micro switch is working fine. So I’m suspecting the timer?

Any help with other things I should check and how to fault find the timer would be greatly appreciated?

    cheers.

Re: Hotpoint Hydrocare 7844 not filling

Sadly the control timer is now obsolete for this 20+ year old machine.

TBH it is the valve that is at fault nine times out of ten,the rubber diaphragm inside the valve perishes and splits with age.

Broken wiring in the door harness where it bends at the bottom, inside the door is also very common at this age..

When it should start to fill can you hear a very faint buzzing noise?

The valve is still available but is around £50.00. 😥

Ahh… thought about the wiring where it bends! will pin the wiring out just to be sure.

No noise of the solenoid trying, the timer just stops and then silence, even the timer is sileent.

Shame about the timer being obselete and the valve being so expensive, what exactly does the diaphragm in the valve do?

Is the float that operates the micro switch on the side of the machine there to tell the machine it has water in it or is that sensor somewhere else?

Also just for interest what is the big moulded plastic network of chambers and pipes on the side of the machine do?

Re: Hotpoint Hydrocare 7844 not filling

The fill chamber on the side meters the water, it fills, overflows into the sump triggering the micro switch . This puts power to the timer, it does this three times and then starts to wash, the timer motor is then supplied via a different circuit. That is why you do not hear the timer when it is filling the chamber.

The diaphragm in the valve is held closed by the plunger which lifts when power is supplied to the coil.

If you cannot hear a buzzing then it points to the wiring or the timer , you need to remove the outer door panel and visually inspect the harness where it bends.
