Does anyone know what the purpose of a metal elastic band wire is within a Zanussi bearing seal?? I took the seal out of the packet and this piece of wire popped out, but I have no idea of its purpose.
It’s difficult to get it back into the recess inside the seal and I don’t want to risk it coming out and making its way along the shaft or something. Can I do without it or does it have a purpose?

It is there to ensure the knife edge wiper edge fits neatly around the drum shaft collar. As that knife edge wears it continues to retain tension throughout the life of the seal. Without that spring wire in place the water seal is useless!
