Hi,
Not talking about a flame out device here, but a device that prevents the grill remaining lit if the grill door is fully closed operating a pin that triggers the gas cut-off.
The problem: If the grill door is left closed for more than a few minutes, it becomes near impossible to get the grill to remain lit no matter how long the regulator is held in. At the last count, I had to leave the grill door open for 4 days before the grill would remain lit after ignition.
It started playing up when the cooker was about 6 months old, but I discovered that if I jiggled the pin, while keeping the regulator depressed, the grill would eventually remain lit. At about 11 months the jiggling trick no longer worked and I resorted to calling an engineer in before the warranty expired. He replaced the offending device, but again after about six months of use, the problem started recurring.
This time, as the cooker was now out of warranty, I elected not to shut the grill door at all after use (the door hinges have a 3/4 closed position that doesn’t operate the cut-off), but recently the landlord sent in an electrician to do a routine electrical inspection of the flat who, inadvertently and unrealised by me, closed the grill door during the process; this is what caused the 4 day wait.
What are my options?
The pin protrudes about 8mm and is depressed 4-5mm when the door is closed, but it only takes about 1mm of travel to operate the cut-off. Could I try holding the pin with a pair of narrow nosed pliers and grind 3mm off, relieving excess pressure on the pin when the door’s closed (no disassembly required)? EDIT: this would not prevent the cut-off from operating when the door is closed, just prevent too much pressure being put on the device causing it to stick.
Try claiming an inherent fault under the Sale of Goods Act?
Or chuck good money after bad, by paying an engineer to repair a naff product which will probably fail again?
Thanks for any advice.

The grill door switch is a known fault on this model but it was fitted by BEKO for good reason as this was one of the models that if the door was shut then it built up carbon monoxide and was linked to a number of deaths so thats why they fitted it on later production and thats also why no one here could ever advise anything else other than get a gas safe fitter to replace the switch again.

Cost more to pursue that than a repair would. You could try getting in touch with BEKO regards a possible good will repair but it depends on the age of it and their not often forthcoming but worth a try.August 16, 2015 at 2:35 pm #392740Martin
