    Help needed please!

My dryer was working normally. There was a very brief smell of burning and then nothing, the dryer had died (no lights turning on). There was no bang, and nothing tripped. I have checked the socket and the fuse, and both are working fine. I’ve gone as far as checking where the mains lead connects to the dryer, but I can’t see anything wrong there. The door switch appears to be okay.

I don’t own a multimeter (and probably wouldn’t be confident with one), so I don’t know that I’d be able to repair it myself but I’m not afraid of having a look with some hand-holding 😀

Could anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay for a repair on a problem like this? I’ve had a fixed price quote of £119.

    Thanks as always!

    :eeek:

It really does need someone with proper test equipment TBH.
    A better alternative 😉

Thank you for your reply. I take it from the smilie that it’s rather expensive? Domestic & General want £177 but I that does include a years guarantee.

My colleague was suggesting the ‘alternative’ being getting a local independent repairer to look at it for you. Often that is indeed the cheapest solution.

Fixed price repairs are very often an out and out con. They take your credit card details before booking an appointment. That then guarantees they have snatched at least £50 (non refundable) from you. Engineer calls, kicks it, takes the top off, scratches his head and declares it needs a major part and will get in touch with his boss…..then exits stage left.

Company calls saying your machine is ‘beyond economic repair’ (BER in the trade) and debit your credit card less the 50 quid call out!

I’m not suggesting for a moment that that would be your experience but that it is a known practice in many such instances. Hence my colleagues ‘alternative’ advice. 😉
