I have a Smeg Cucina SE375MEB5,serial no.40701 and in the past few days it’s been taking ages to preheat, roughly 35 or 40 mins to get to 2OOC.

The temp light is working fine, ie if the temp light is on while preheating the oven to 200c, and i then turn the temp. dial to a lower temp, then the temp light will go off at whatever temp the oven has reached.
The grill is working and also the fan is working.

According to the manual, this symbol ‘( )’ (sorry,it needs a quarter turn)means ‘Top and Bottom heating elements’.
When the dial is set at that symbol and the oven is preheating, im only feeling heat with my hand from the bottom of the oven, the top of the oven is cold to the touch, so i’m guessing the ‘upper heating element’ is not working at all?

Could anyone confirm if this would be correct? The thing is, i’ve ‘googled’ for an upper heating element for this model but can’t find any reference to one anywhere 🙁

Any help with this much appreciated, cheers.

    ***EDIT**
Would i be correct in saying that the Grill element also acts as the Upper oven element ?
If so, i have just tried the Grill,it works fine and heats up fast, but when dial is set to Top and Bottom heating elements, the grill element is not heating up.
My wife reckons that when the dial is set to Top and Bottom heating elements, then the grill element should heat up too ?

Re: Smeg Cucina SE375 single oven takes ages to pre-heat.

Can anyone confirm if the grill element also acts as the upper oven element ?

When the dial is set at ‘upper and lower’ heating element, only the flat steel base of the oven heats up, the exposed grill element at the top of the oven doesn’t heat up.There is NO heat from the top of the oven.

If the dial is set to ‘Grill’,then the exposed grill(or upper oven element does indeed heat up.

The oven takes ages to pre-heat .

If the upper oven element doubles as the grill element, why wont it come on when in ‘oven’ mode, but works fine when in ‘grill’ mode ?

    Cheers

Hi: Without actually being able to test the oven it’s difficult to say, I would have thought the top element should work along with the bottom element when in oven mode so you get uniform heating. It’s possible that you have a control faulty but without testing the unit it’s impossible to say for sure. It might be an idea for you to contact a local engineer to check it out for you, if you click on the link above your 1st post you should be able to find an approved engineer in your area.
