ParticipantWe have had this washing machine for nearly 4 years (it came with the kichen when we bought the house). Three problems:
1) the spin cyle seems to have stopped working. It seems to do the normal washing bit fine though. In the end the clothes come out dripping wet.
2) the machine sometimes doesn’t drain. In the manual it says that the filter may be blocked. When I check, all that happens is the kichen floor gets flooded and the filter wasn’t blocked. It seems that it is blocking somewhere else… It doesn’t do this each time though.
3) the heating element appears to be erratic. sometimes it heats, sometimes it doesn’t seem to heat very much, sometimes it doesn’t heat at all.
We are contemplating simply buying a new machine altogether as repairing what is really quite a mediocre washing machine is likely to be pretty costly.
Up til now, we have been using Calgon with most washes and are running one of those washing machine cleaner sachets with an empty machine to see if it works
Are there any things you might suggest (aside from chucking the damn thing out?)
Any advice would be much appreciated – we have a 5 month old baby now and he gets through a hell of a lot of clothes!
THANKS VERY MUCH!

Hi julian,
The no-spin could be a blockage or a module failure, possibly the capacitor but if you’re not sure it is an engineer job to delve into it. It’s unliklely to be anything else although it is possible.
Heating, if it’s erratic, is pretty unusual IME on these machine and I’ve seen one or two. 😉
To replace it with another integrated machine you’re looking at spending a bit, certainly a lot more than a repair I should expect. Very hard to get a decent integrated washer as well, most of them ain’t that hot IMO.

ParticipantIntermittant spin AND heat would point towards the water level control system. However, not draining will also prevent spin BECAUSE of the water level control system. The most likely culprit on this is a worn drain pump becoming erratic in its operation.
Given that you have a combination fault here I would suggest getting an engineer – check the Directories section, pop up your postcode in here or try out the new Repairs@ section.

Thank you very much kwatt and Penguin45 for your quick replies. It does sound like a fairly complicated job (certainly beyond me) so I would definitely call an engineer to look at it.
This next question may be beyond your remit but is there an approximate price that one would expect to pay for such a repair (parts, labour, call out charges etc…) obviously it must vary quite a bit (and depend on what gets replaced) but are we looking at much over 100 – 150 Pounds? (probably!)
With regard to the possibility of buying a new machine, we were thinking of just having a normal (not integrated) one as the one we have is only integrated inasmuch as it has been slid under the worktop (there are no fancy covers on the front or kick boards etc – the builders never put them on I suppose and we never missed them). We were looking at a Candy or Servis for about 260 Pounds. I think the integrated ones seem to be pretty overpriced for what they are.
Well, FYI, news just in – the machine is still running with that sachet thing in it and the water inside is heating up nicely – let’s just hope it drains!
Thank you for your help – the resource that you offer is really a goldmine.

Keymasterjulian,
To replace the pump, about £80ish ex VAT all in incl. labour and the module is about £50 on it’s own. and a heater, were it required, about £20. So really it’s not that bad but MFI are pretty reasonable on spares pricing. 😉
Avoid Servis like the plague is my advice and Candy isn’t much better these days. 😕
