KeymasterWe have a new Bosch Classix 1600 which has developed a habit of marking cotton or cotton-rich clothes with an unmistakeable pattern. An illustration appears at
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/haylett/IMG_0138_sm.jpg
The ‘grid’ of dark round marks matches the pattern of the holes on the washing machine drum. I’m wondering (a) whether anyone else has seen anything like this and (b) what explanation one could come up with for this effect. Too high a spin speed, dirt in the machine, etc? The marks cannot be washed out. [This was for a light-only wash, 40C, brand detergent, machine recently run through high-temp wash with soda.]Andrew.

Now there’s a good one!
What detergent is it that you’re using and do you know if there’s been any groundworks recently in the area?
TBH that’s a nice puzzler and I’ve already sent an email looking for an answer from the boffins that will be able to answer it for you. But I’ll ferret around some of the tech info I have as well.
I should very much doubt that the appliance is at fault, I would be very, very surprised if that was the case.

We normally use Tesco bio capsules. For the last wash which showed problems we’d switched to Ariel bio liquid.
I’m not aware of any groundworks in the area. What’s the significance of that question (excuse my ignorance)?
I would agree that it doesn’t look like an appliance fault. But I’m at a loss for any rational explanation (and it’s ruined several perfectly good items of clothing 🙁
Many thanks indeed for your help!

KeymasterOwn brand stuff, yuck. 😉
Any groundworks can disturb the water pipes and all the gunk sitting at the bottom (sediment) gets chucked up and into the supply. This can affect wash results for days after the work is complete from what I’ve seen, in some cases longer.
I will find the answer.

Do you live in a hard water area? we get called out on a regular basis.
It s a combination of hard water and 40 degree washes, carry out a service wash: 90 degree with a cupful of washing soda it may take a couple of washes to clear it.
Best of luck Kirk

We do live in a hard water area (Cambridge). I followed your advice – 90deg wash w/soda. Then we ran another light load through, with a reduced spin speed. It doesn’t seem to have improved things significantly. In fact, light cotton items don’t seem particularly clean, never mind the odd marks.
Very puzzling. We have arranged for a Bosch engineer to visit in a couple of weeks, so I’ll see what he says…any other thoughts here appreciated, since I’m not sure he’ll be able to diagnose it either.

I spoke with one of the guys as Proctor & Gamble on this yesterday Andrew and they, like me, suspect that it’s something in the water as the marks look as if they where created on spin as the water was expelled from the clothing. Which pretty much holds with Kirk’s post as well.
From the photo there’s no clear cut, “this is what it is”, but that’s the answer essentially. If you want to know for sure then look at the side of the pack of Ariel and there is a number there for support and they should be able to analyse one of the garments for you and pinpoint the exact cause.
However I’d suggest trying a good powder instead of the liguid capsules as the liquid detergents do not contain a bleaching agent. 😉

That sounds quite plausible. Obviously the thicker cotton absorbs the dirty stuff from the water as it gets expelled. So there may be something in the plumbing of the w/m itself that is introducing the stains – oil leakage, perhaps. I don’t think it’s likely to be either the detergent (have tried two different kinds, never gave any problem before) or the water supply (never gave problems with old w/m), so perhaps the w/m was built on a Friday afternoon… 😉 But I shall keep an open mind for the time being.
Many thanks indeed for all the help and research, and I shall report back after the Bosch engineer’s visit.
Andrew.
