ParticipantHi, my Lg F1403RD Washer/Dryer has a problem which I experienced with my previous LG Washer/Dryer in that the Soft Rinse does not remain in the dispenser but goes in with either the soap or with one of the pre-soft-rinse rinses. I have spoken with LG and had the engineers look at it several times but no-one can come up with a solution, even after fitting a new drawer assembly, water inlet over the drawer, valves and sensors. Consequently I am unable to set up a wash with soap and soft-rinse and go away and leave the machine to do it’s thing. I have to wait until the machine reaches 20 minutes before the end, which is the point at which the final ‘soft-rinse’ program is activated, pause the machine, put the soft rinse in a soap-ball and into the machine and then set the machine going again to do the final rinse. This is all very inconvenient but LG have dismissed my complaints saying that there is ‘no known fault with this model’. We have tried turning down the water pressure so that it does not splash over into the soft-rinse compartment and we have shecked the level of the machine. We never slam the drawer shut and never over-fill the compartment beyond the ‘max’ line.
Any ideas please.

An explanation of how it works is here…

There’s really not much that can go wrong.

Hi: To be honest they’ve changed all the things that most of us would do in this situation. The only other thing I can think of is either Corrupted control software or a Faulty control board activating the system at the wrong point in the programme for some reason.

I no it might be stating the obvious but you arn’t over filling and accidentally starting the syphoning when you shut the soap draw before starting the machine are you?

Just been talking to a friend who’s an LG service agent & he says that when adding softener it should be nowhere near the max line as it will cause self Syphoning of the liquid in the dispenser, the max line is the dispense line when water is added & not the measurement line for the softener. He suggests trying the machine with just 2 Tablespoons of softener & see what happens.

Thanks for your replies everyone. To Specialist01269 – thanks for your input. Tried slowly putting very little softrinse in and even then sometimes I can see the softrinse draining out as I am putting it into the drawer compartment and it has even run directly out of the drawer, down the side of the machine and onto the floor. Also, I think the engineer fitted a PCB, an NTC sensor, a thermostat and a harness but none of this had any effect. With all due respect I quite honestly feel that a ‘Max’ indicator is surely for the user to observe not the water and I rarely fill anywhere near that level. Some say don’t use the thick gloopy brands and some say don’t use the thin runny stuff. LG says there is no problem but I have spoken with others who have the same problem with their machines and have given up trying to use softrinse altogether. They just use the 2-in-1 combo washing products. Thanks again everyone.

To be fair…
The manufacturers of softener and a lot of the time, detergents, give little thought to how they will perform or operate on all but a few test machines from a handful of brands. It simply isn’t practical to test on all machines.
You have regional variations as well as the usual global brands that often “tweak” formulas for local markets such as you won’t find non-bio detergent anywhere bar the UK as an example. They are also not unknown to change formulas on existing brands and, washing machine manufacturers cannot go back and change how the machines operate to compensate for that.
Likewise, it isn’t practical to test with every softener and/or detergent in every washing machine. It just cannot be done given the sheer number of possible combinations.
Then, among all that, it has to be assumed that people use it all correctly which they often do not Im afraid. Not that I’m saying that’s the case here, just making the point.

Hi kwatt – thanks again for that. I understand what you are saying here. Perhaps the syphon method of dispensing needs some tweeking to take account of all the variations in conditioner consistencies. Unfortunately I am unable to try different brands of conditioner as I am allergic to perfumes etc so I am stuck with the brand I currently use. This really is such a frustrating design anomoly especially when it was present in a previous machine and other people experience the same with their machines. Cheers. ToniT

Hi helo_75 – how would that alter things? and do you mean the nozzle that is part of the drawer (grey on my machine) or the nozzle part of the blue indicator piece that clips onto the drawer?

It would make it a lot harder for the appliance to self syphon, if the machine is still under guarantee then any non approved modification may well invalidate your guarantee.

Hi again Specialist01269 – the machine is no longer within Warranty and LG have disowned it as far as this and another problem, with the dryer vents clogging up with lint, are concerned. They just deny that there is any ‘known fault’ with this model. Yesterday my hubby took the dryer fan and vent apart to clean the blockage out for a third time in two years (had engineers to it three times now and the third time the guy didn’t know what he was doing and left the machine blocked)and whilst it was out of action I took the dispenser drawer to the sink and filled the conditioner compartment with water to the ‘Max’ level and, no matter how I moved the drawer, the water stayed in the compartment. As soon as I put a little extra water in to take it over the ‘Max’ line it began to syphon. This leads me and my hubby to think that, even though a new drawer and water inlet assembly were fitted some time ago under warranty with no effect, there is still a fault with either the design of the drawer or, more likely, a fault with the water inlet allowing water to flow or overflow into the conditioner before the correct part of the program.
I really am so frustrated that LG can deny all responsibility for faults such as this and it is now down to my extended warranty cover to pick up the tab. Cheers again everyone.May 8, 2013 at 4:45 pm #394547Specialist01269

Hi: I can certainly understand your frustration, if it’s not under guarantee then you really have nothing to lose by trying helo’s suggestion & may well gain a machine that works as you were expecting in the 1st place.

Hi
Are you using the correct dose, you do not need to fill to max level. Check the amount needed on the softener container.

I really am grateful to all you gents for your time and input. I consider myself pretty resourceful and my husband, who was a motor engineer, is usually able to diagnose and solve most mechanical problems but this has us both scratching our heads. Having tried all sorts of techniques to no avail, I have now bought a new AEG Washer Dryer – am using the same Fabric Conditioner and amounts – and the machine has worked perfectly without any problem of taking the conditioner too early. I will now sell on the LG, advising the new owner of it’s quirks, and wave goodbye to an extremely frustrating episode. Many thanks again to everyone. ToniT.
