My beloved washing machine seems to have developed a strange fault…

First of all, the on/off button got stuck into its recess. However, with a small screwdriver we managed to unstick it. But now, even with the power switched on the machine simply won’t start. And the ‘door locked’ light keeps flashing.

I’m down to my last pair of socks so all help gratefully received!

This indicates that the machine has a problem with the button, the door lock, or the board that controls the door lock…

If you keep trying to operate the machine in this condition you could damage it further.

If you are very lucky it may just be the spring broken in the door latch. It’s quite easy to ‘split’ the door to examine.
If the spring is ok then the door interlock itself may be faulty. Sadly it is also quite common for the door interlock to fail and take out the main circuit board at the same time. A visual examination of the front of the pcb will show obvious signs of this. Be sure to remove the mains plug if you intend to open it up.
