ParticipantGuys & Gals,
I’m looking for advice here.
Just about to move, and the new house has an electric hob and separate oven. Note the house has no piped gas.
I’m toying with the idea of replacing the Hob with a gas hob, being quite a handy and infavour of DIY oh and some might say tight. I’d like to do the job myself. I’ve done a bit of plumping, fair amount of electrics and reglarily fixed car “plumbing” (electrics, Water and fuel) so would like to know the feasibility of doing the following.
I’ve never seen this type of installation so be prepared for some stupid statements and questions 😉
Since there is no gas in the house I’m guess some form of bottled gas, (Blue, yellow … cylinders?) placed outside next to the kitchen wall. Run a pipe, approx 3m into where the hob will be located.
Ok so making the hole in the wall for a pipe is not an issue.
Hole for airvent??
Which type of gas?
Pipe work, high spec rubber hose over 3m? or mostly copper pipe (any spec?) and flexible at either end?Or is this something that even a competant DIYer should leave to an expert?
Insurance implications?All comments welcome
TrevPS great site!!

Trev,
No one should attempt any gas installation unless they are Corgi registered, full stop. Your last line said it all.

First off this installation MUST be carried out by a registered CORGI engineer its definetly Not a DIY’ers project.
depending on which make of hob you have depends if it can be converted to run on LPG ( red bottled propane gas).
The pipework would be a coated copper pie that would run through the wall but the engineer would advise on the installation.
Insurance side of it, they could invalidate your clain if it was found to be due to your DIY work that caused a fire or explosion and you could also face criminal proceedings also (worst case).
hope this helps

Del is totally correct Trev and even more so with LPG, which is the gas which you would need to use, as the jets in the hob will need changing from natural to LPG and it all tested for soundness.
I would recommend that you contact Calor who will advise properly and I would doubt in the extreme that they would allow you to DIY install a permanent tank as, IIRC, there is legislation governing it.
Hope that helps.
