Keymaster👿 As I mentioned before. The engineer was supposed to come today to sort out our noisy freezer (he fitted a new motor last week). He hasn’t turned up and can get no answer on his phone. I got his name from Yellow pages. Any ideas where I go from here or is it a case of just replacing it with a new one and look happy.

Maggie,
Its still Friday so he may turn up and sort is for you 🙂 .
Can I ask though, when he did the repair last week, did he give you a written receipt with his business name on it?

He gave me a receipt but it was not on headed notepaper. He just asked me for a piece of paper. His name was on his overalls and his van was sign written so I didn’t have any reason to think he was not reputable. He was supposed to be bringing a new motor with him today encase this one was faulty. He asked for us to make sure the freezer was out from under the work surface so we had no reason to think he would not arrive. I have not had a phone call to say why he hasn’t turned up so I am beginning to think this is a lost cause. While he was here all he kept saying was that the work was taking him a lot longer than he had thought and that he would not be making any money from this work. The cost was one hundred and seventy five pounds.

Did he offer any sort of guarantee for the repair? and what’s the make/model number of your freezer?

Hi,
he charged you enough to make a good profit and to ensure he should guarantee his work for 12 months. You should also always insist on a proper itemised bill showing materials, labour and VAT(if charged). This should also have his business name and address and telephone contact details on it.
A compressor change on one of these in the house is no mean feat….tricky at best, lifting the cabinet away ect..it would take me about 90 minutes start to finish to do this, he has priced accordingly(with some to spare). Please keep us informed if he phones to explain his absence today.

He did put his phone number on his piece of paper as a reference number and he did verbally say this motor had a 12 months guarantee. The freezer does not have a make listed on it. It is one MFI put in their kitchens but the motor was an Electrolux. He hasn’t replace it with an Electrolux motor. I will let you know if he gets in touch or arrives to finish the work. Thank you.

Make sure you chase this guy, dont let him get away with shoddy work and service. Asking you for a piece of paper to write the reciept on is not a good sign.
Just a thought but your fridge may have a condenser fan on it which could be the source of the noise, maybe something is catching on it since the repair. We do however get the odd noisy compressor and it is the most frustrating thing as we cannot run them before fitting and it, as stated earlier, is a lot of work.January 23, 2005 at 2:36 pm #124104admin

You should not be writing this off, clowns like this give the trade a bad name.
1) Tell him about this site and that you have posted it, advise him that if he has a conscience he had better respond favourably.
2) Contact your local trading standards who are within your local authority. They may well have a record of any previous dealings.
3) Inform the source of where you found this repairer that you may have been the victim of sharp practice. Whether it was by an advert, word of mouth you will need to ensure this does not continue.
4) Most importantly tell him you will do this unless you receive a full refund.
If all else fails, then name & shame him, you never know he may be well known.

Ohhhh dismay!
How often do we in the trade hear tales like this?….far TOO often!
Please please maggie do take the time to report this to your local trading standards officer….we in the trade will be eternally grateful…and you being a member of the general public will be far less likely to be victims of the ‘cowboys’

😀 Good news. We managed to get hold of the refrigerator man on Sunday using another mobile so that he would not recognise the number.
My husband said that he would like him to look at the freezer again otherwise he would get in touch with trading standards. He came on Monday afternoon, tested the compressor again and said he thought it was faulty. He came back this afternoon and fitted a new one. This one is very quiet as it should be. We managed to cancel the new freezer we ordered without losing any money. Its been a bit frustrating but all is well now. Thanks for all the advice.January 27, 2005 at 9:35 pm #124108Dave_Conway
