Pan of water, bring up to boil then reduce to a simmer. Or, go round for a late breakfast and get out the frying pan for a full English (oops Scottish). Flip a few pancakes and poach an egg or three on the remaining hotplates whilst you’re there! 😀

TBH it’s best just to do the water in pan boil test and then reduce the heat to a simmer ensuring the regulator works. Rather than checking the time it takes to boil. That at least proves it reaches maximum heat and that the temperature can be regulated.

The water in the pan thing generally depends on the thickness and insulation of the pan.. I would just place an ammeter on the power cable and test the draw, then use the simmer stay to check drop/lift

Cheap hob, Cheap pans?
Take a couple of good quality solid base pans with you to do the test.
Cheap thin pans that have gone convex on the base don’t perform well on electric hobs.

Had a similar problem with a stoves range cooker a few years back. When I spoke to the tech in the labs in Prescot, he said the test was a measured pint of water in a pan of a similar diam as the ring should come to boil within 4 minutes
