    I was thinking….

And Dave and Kev don’t run away just yet! πŸ˜†

Is there any merit in approaching manufacturers for tech and spares help and, if there is, would you be prepared to pay for it from them?

My thinking is to try to get a “pool” of information that we can dip into as and when required for the brands that we need to.

    Just a random thought.

I’m keeping the starting blocks handy…….

We are accumulating info through the membership with the fault code thread, but it is painfully slow. We have a small growing fund of money from the Subscribers and an unrsolved rebate about what to do with it. Seems a perfectly reasonable solution to me……….

Are we not chasing our own tails here on this one?

You may recall I brought this subject up last September and comments like “in breach of copywrite” were cited as the main stumbling block πŸ™

    Re: Technical/Spares Information

Copyright is the main problem, but it can be bought at a price, which will be a large one I would think.

I would imagine by now some, if not all of the manufacturers will have noticed that we share most of the info here anyway, so.. they will be losing sales on cd’s, dvd’s and manuals.

I’m quite happy to email “brian” or we could ask him at the meeting if he turns up, Merloni being by far the largest and most expensive disk, which has no tech info on it anyway.

TDS is readily available to anyone at Β£20 + VAT a throw so that’s no issue really, and it has all the tech stuff on it.

SIOS is relatively cheap as well, which also has wiring diagrams as well as spares but no bulletins (they have a website for that, Service Partners only).

GIAS also have a website with all the tech info on it now, readily available free of charge to all account holders.

So, with Lux, Whirlpool, GIAS and Merloni, which others would be of use ?

Add this to the Friday meeting Agenda as some will be there ?

there is a though that has gone through my mind here.. 😈

Uk whitegoods is a ltd company Is It not?? πŸ˜‰

therefore if the company purchased the said disc’s then as members or PARTNERS within the said company we should be able to access this information through a central database ? 😈 .

the discs are sold to companies for the companies use 😈

just a thought to get on with.

Bloody hell, that got you all thinking! πŸ˜†

Chris, I doubt that there’s enough money there by a long way yet to pay for the likes of this but that’s not to say that it’s not worth looking into.

Martin I was thinking on buying the information legitimately and possibly the technical support as well. What it would cost us I’ve absolutely no idea but we’d have to do above board and legitimately.

Dave is correct and where what you meant last year, or at least alluded to, wouldn’t work because we were looking at this from a point of view entirely differently to now. We have to respect the copyright and we have to play by the rules here if we want the support from the manufacturers which, in all honesty, we need if we are to make this work.

The actual cost of the spares information is not that high and I think that the wiring information etc. is tacked on there just to dangle a carrot and add a little value in buying it. I mean let’s face it, they buggers make enough off the spares to hand out the information like sweeties for free just to sell the parts. They don’t because they are well aware that mugs like us will pay for it.

So, I don’t think that we should have to pay for the information but that’s not the reality of the situation. But what I do think is that if we did a deal with a few of them that we could gain access to more technical support than is currently available. I don’t know if we can pull it off, but I do think that it may be worth trying.

Bryan, you are absolutely correct but this is something (AGAIN!) that’s never ever been attempted before. Whilst we could purchase the information and probably will anyway at some point, we still have to respect the copyright or they’d sue our arse off and some people would just love me to give them the excuse to do just that. So caution is required in just how this is done.

But remember we do have the likes of AGORA out there and, as yet, I’ve not spoken to them to see just what the access would cost to all the information there, but that does cover a huge amount of appliances. Even getting everyone access to that or the UK one just as a start will show that we’re serious and that we’ll pay for the info if it is of value to us.

Worth a thought and batting about a bit.

    Ken,

Do please stick it on the agenda for Friday as Dave suggests.

This I believe is a major issue that could help all of us so very much to get along much more easily with the massive product range out there. If only the likes of Merloni (or should we call them Indesit now?) would realise this, we might even start to sell and recommend their products again? Whether they are crap or not, they still hold the major shareholding to what is OUR future after all πŸ™‚

Agora? Don’t know who they are, but give me some of that as well if it’ll help earn me a crust 8)

    Re: Technical/Spares Information

AGORA is at http://www.agoraplus.com/ and is the site that many manufacturers use to deliver spares and technical information. Without an account you will not get on there and it can be tailored for access to you and the brands that you wish to get information on. You will need to use Internet Explorer to view it though as no other browser is supported.

    It could be a start.

Well the email is away that may set this into motion. I don’t mess around Martin, if it’s doable I’ll simply get it done! And if the UK manufacturers loose sales to someone in France then tough in my book, they should have got their head out their collective butts and addressed the problem long ago.

    AGORA covers…

    BRANDT
    B/S/H/
    ELECTROLUX France
    FAGOR France
    FAGOR EspaΓ±a
    GIAS Service
    MERLONI
    MIELE
    PHILIPS APPAREILS DOMESTIQUES
    PODIUM SOGEDIS
    GROUPE SEB
    WHIRLPOOL

Not a bad start if all the French stuff is available in English and applies for UK models, which I’m pretty sure it will as it looks to be a dump for all the information that was on CD/DVD.

AGORA can be accessed without each manufacturers permission apparently so I’ve asked for pricing etc if we do this en masse. However, looking at the pricing that is there I reckon we could get access for a year for not a lot more than one of the CD’s for the above!

And there’s a bit there that we just don’t have access to at all at the moment. πŸ˜‰

    Can it ? 😯

I always thought that each area had to be authorised by the manufacturer and have the relevent account in place.

Let’s see what they say anyway πŸ˜€

    Dave.

I have to say I thought it was restriced according to whom you are given permission by, if you get my drift.

We can access the Brandt section only, and I’m expecting that to end soon. It isn’t the best of sites, but better than some of the far eastern ones.

Ah, you only have access to Brandt as that’s all the access that Brandt has paid for on your behalf. πŸ˜‰
