Is it possible for a machine to heat up on a 60oC wash but not heat up on a 40oC wash ?

Would it be a problem with the sensor or something else, as im sure this is happening on my machine.

Rule no 1 : Always give us the make and model so we have a clue as to what machine you refer to.

Older machines with both hot and cold fill supplies then it is possible. Cold fill only machines not so as at each temperature the heater would be required to come into play.

its a hoover eco wave 5, doesnt seem to be heating on 40 but is on 60, what is the likely cause and what part could need replacing ?

    hoover a1110

edit : my mistake, just done another cycle and its working ok now on the 40, it just didnt feel that warm before when i felt the glass door ? is it possible for the temp to drop/fluctuate ??, it is a fairly old machine
