Fantastic site chaps, bookmarked for future reference…

Our dear old Zanussi 918T is starting to show it’s age now (20-ish, I’m sure) and the time is coming for replacement. We’d like a washer/ dryer this time round, but the market has changed so much in the past couple of years that I’m not so sure of the best brands any more…

By choice and price point, I’d be going for either another Zanussi, or one of the Merloni brands. Is there *much* difference between the various Merloni units now- in terms of quality or reliability, say between Hotpoint and Indesit?

As you’ll be aware, this old stager has an induction motor; because of this I’m drawn to towards the “super-silent” Hotpoints- specifically the WD640. Is there much experience of these in the marketplace, and is it positive? Or have todays brush motors improved in noise level and longevity that it’s a non-issue?

I’m aware that the latest machines may be slower to cycle than the older stuff due to decreases water levels, but how much of a difference is there? And can we expect reasonable drying performance from the condenser dryer as compared to our present vented stand-alone?

Sorry for all the questions, but I’m away from the innards of todays stuff ( I deal with dish/ glasswashers in my day job but haven’t been inside an auto in some time now…)

Thaksk for the commetns re the site DPM.

To get something of a similar quality to your Zanussi 918, frankly, you’ll struggle these days unless it wears a “Made In Germany” badge on it. 😕

Washer dryers are a compromise on the drying, they will not perform as well as a seperate dryer will, in fact nowhere near the same performance as a seperate dryer. If you have the space I would always recommend seperates to a customer.

Zanussi is part of teh Electrolux Group so you can save a few bob by going for the less desireable Tricity name and get the same thing basically with a different dress on, or pay more and get an AEG badge on it. 😉

Merloni, there’s little or no difference at all that I know of. I think some of the drum units are a crossbreed between Merloni and Hotpoint. The less I say about that idea the better methinks, but my personal opinion is not high of any of the brands.

There is quite a marked difference in the wash performance of older machines without the “AAA” ratings being in force and the newer appliances. The do take longer, a lot in many cases. Figure on about an hour and a half or more on a lot of them for a 40C wash. 🙁

    Hope that helps.

    David,

From your posting it’s clear to me you have at least thought this out or at least are well into ‘the next step’ 😆

Don’t consider a Washer/Dryer unless you are stuck for space (seperate dryer always better/quicker/cheaper). Your Zanussi is a beautiful machine with no current equivalent (except most Miele machines that is) But I for one would suggest perhaps a BOSCH WF02466 as a pretty good piece of kit and would likely last you 10yrs plus!!!!!!!

    So there 🙂

Thanks for the responses, chaps. It’s interesting that the old’un is held in such high regard, but that doesn’t really help me out now, LOL.

Aye, it’s a funny game, white goods. Incest is rife,eh?

So… Miele is a *little* beyond our means- strange tho, in the lab dishwashers, Miele has never impressed me, always just seemed a pricey domestic vs the Lancers, Hamos etc. Never looked much better built than the retail Servis or whatever that the schools bought on-the-cheap…

But a combo wash/dry it’ll be. We’ve a sensible dryer out in the garage but the option of using an internal unit on a cold wet evening is too tempting not to specify for.

As time is not of the essence, I’ll probably instruct a good friend of mine in the trade with access to graded goods to keep an eye out for a nice’un that suits.

    David,

You asked the question of us but clearly decided to take the washer/dryer option anyway….ah well 😯

Martin, as I can’t find any evidence of the drying add-ons reducing the quality of the wash, I’m content to spend the extra couple of quid getting the option. It might only be used once in a while, and the stand-alone dryer is out in the garage anyway.

The big question for us will be, depending on our experiences with a combo, would we replace the existing dryer when it reaches the end of it’s life. Time will tell.

    Thanks again for your comments.
