We have a trusty Bosch WFF 2000 and have just changed the carbon brushes for the second time. However, now when the spin speed increases, it trips the main residual current-operated circuit breaker and there is a smell of burning carbon.

We bought the most recent set of brushes from your website because we wanted to be sure of getting good quality, the last set having been cheap and only lasted 2 years.

When we changed the brushes, we used a commutator cleaner and cleaned around the general area to remove as much carbon as possible.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this please?

Most likely the armature has had it. Doubtless proved by testing with a 500DCv insulation tester (aka Megger). In simple terms the insulation between the commutator segments will have broken down. Any discoloured segments are a dead giveaway. The only cure = new motor. 🙁

Thank-you very much for your assistance. I am loath to give up on this machine because it has been so reliable and is so well made compared to new machines but a new motor is not cost-effective and I don’t want to mess around with second-hand, so it looks like a new machine for us.
