ParticipantLooking to replace our ancient trusty Bosch fridge/freezer, been going for something like 15+ years, its now looking a little shabby, although still working, fridge stuff isn’t as cold, and get ice build up in fridge. Popped into Currys and fancy a American Style one, possibly with a drinks dispenser on front. Only popped in to have an initial look, not bothered where buy from, online etc though.
They were a bit more than thought, but still will go for one think. Any recommendations? Are the front water dispensers really any good, or just a fad, that once used a few times never get used?
Measured my current fridge/freezer though, and it looks like the depth of the new one is going to be a problem, its 610mm deep, and is flush with the front of the workbench now, so any bigger and its going to stick out in the kitchen where it will be stood, no other place for it, also looks like only have about 850mm for the width.
Any makes or models to avoid? Any makes/models to choose? Anything specific to look out for?
Also where to buy from online/high street etc? John Lewis is good but for example there’s a FF on there that’s £120 more than currys. Can you just email/call John Lewis and they’ll match or is it not that easy?
So fire away please…

Hi
A good read here on American refrigeration here and then this one on fridge freezers.
From your’e measurements I don’t think you are going to get an American fridge freezer that size. If you can create the space then I would recommend one of the original “American” ones like Maytag, Amana etc and leave the Korean ones alone like LG and Daewoo unless budget says otherwise.
If you have to go down the standard fridge freezer route then I would look at a 70cm width machine which will give you more internal space. There isn’t a lot out there but may be worth researching. Also remember to check the depths as well as a lot of them are deeper than your’e 61cm.
When it comes to shopping preferences I will always go to a specialist electrical retailer first as they are unbiased and are customer focused, secondly John Lewis and then the internet. If you are looking at purely price then you will need to research yourself thoroughly before buying from the net. When it comes to the net Appliances online and OGormans are probably about the best ones.

We’ve got the Panasonic version. Nice bit of kit and is fairly narrow.

thanks Don. Having more research to
day it looks like an American is out as you say. I think, although we’re trying to move and probably the new house would have space, we need a new one now really, and will have to be a standard one.Agree with trying to get a 70cm+ one to give more space, we wanted a large one. Also I will accept a little bit more depth if sticking out a little, but obviously the less sticking out the better.
Also wife still saying she wants a drinks dispenser one (water thingy on front). When I had a look in Currys, the basic ones, were literally just a spout that you push to let water out of the tank. No filters or anything. Are they just a fad? useful? suppose will keep the water cool, but have to be changed often? or is it ok to open a bottled water, pour in and leave for a few days before replacing?
Dont think there’s any specialist retailers in high street local tbh, online probably better. JL always been good, but thir prices are much more than say Currys, not sure if they do any old price match?

Hi
The fridge freezers like the Beko ones with the “spout” is just a prefilled water bottle on the inside of the door. The only true water and machines are on the American ones.
Most and cities across the UK have some sort of independent retailer normally in the suburbs. This Retra link http://www.retra.co.uk/?page_id=8 will let you check your nearest.

The Panasonic is the American style. Beware though the water filters are £70 and have to be replaced every 6 months. Good fridge though
