KeymasterMy Creda Condenser Tumble Dryer has stopped working so I have been waiting for an excuse to buy a Gas Dryer. A friend has a Creda (I think) Gas Dryer which he has had for quite a few years – he swears by it – very cheap to run etc…….
What are your thoughts on these? I am buying the White Knight BG447

Look forward to reading your replies!

Paul,
Indeed the gas tumble dryer is an efficient economical machine. However when they go wrong and having to have them regularly serviced, getting a ‘CORGI Registered’ agent to do that is the difficulty.
They are hard to come by these days 🙁

I bought my White Knight gas dryer over 10 years ago. Very low running costs and very little trouble. All I’ve needed to replace in that time are some heat sensors and the fluff filter (all from Crosslee), although it seems these days the fan isn’t blowing as hard as it used to. Fascia/switches are a bit loose on mine so the unit tends to ‘buzz’ when in use. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to keep the filter clear as the airflow is neccessary to keep the flame area cooled.

Thanks for the replies!
The Corgi side of things is not a problem – I have the neccessary qualifications to do the work!
So I think this is a safe bet to buy this Dryer then – thanks again for the advice.

Hi Paul,
I have no idea what the failure rate is like on these dryers but I know that when they were first introduced our engineers hated them with a passion. From what I can gather many of them seem still to despise the things.
If you have the qualifications I assume you mean that you have the gas tumble dryer module as it is a seperate module for a low-volume appliance, hence there’s not a lot of guys out there that repair them as I said in a post the other night. In fact, in all the information I’ve had back I cannot recall seeing anyone that actually does repairs on them. 😕

Hi kwatt,
I do have the module for domestic laundry appliances – anyway – they are a very rare item – i only know 2 people that have them and they are also in the gas industry!
I am surprised that they are not more popular as they are much more cost effective to run!

KeymasterThey are indeed cheaper to run, but the price premium pays for a lot of drying in a conventional electric or condensor dryer and, with the condensor, there’s a fair degree of flexability in installation that just isn’t possible with a gas one. Even a standard one there’s the ever popular, “hang the hose out the window” installation arrangement. 😉
And with the condensor you don’t need the vent hole in the wall which you do with gas (IIRC) to comply with the regs on ventilation. More cost if you’re not up to DIY’ing it.
Then there’s the cost of installation itself, which to comply with the safety issue isn’t cheap but if you’re qualified to do it’s not an issue, but add £70-100 for that as well to the price.
Then the rarity of people that want and, indeed, are able to repair them when they fail.
All in all for the man in the street not really a viable alternative in my opinion and probably, in the end, just as expensive or more so, over the lifespan of the appliance to run. In a commercial situation, different ball game of course.
