Hi,I just bought a Belling XOU270SS for £20 that is brand new but was sitting in someones garage for 2 years as the contractor who renovated their home fitted it with their new kitchen but it kept blowing the trip when switched on. He replaced it and never came back for the faulty one.

I work in electronics and took a chance on it as I reckoned it was a 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} chance it was a dodgy element. When I plugged it in everything seemed to work to fine until it heated to the temp setting and when it went to turn off the RCD tripped. When it cooled down a bit I turned on again it started ok, I was cycling through the different functions and when I turned it back to off the trip blew again. I tested all the elements with a multimeter and the resistence was as expected so they all seemed ok.

After some more trial and error I worked out that it blows the trip whenever it turns off either via the selector switch or when it reaches the desired temperature. I started disconnecting one element at a time and retrying the oven. I found that everything works fine whenever the top oven/grill element is dicsonnected. As soon as I reconnect it it starts blowing the trip again. I bought a replcement element but the problem is still the same. I have also checked the wiring and everything seems good.

Has anyone seen a fault like this before or does anyone have any ideas for further troubleshooting?

    Thanks.

    Re: Belling XOU270SS blowing trip

We come across this regularly in the trade.
Most likely the elements are low, meaning that there is a slight short to earth. Normally you will find this on ones that have been not stored in a warm dry environment prior to fitting in kitchen.
Something you can do yourself is turn on the oven controls without switching on appliance, disconnect the earth lead going to the appliance & run on test for say 1/2 hour to an hour.
    WARNING 💡
While its on test its extremely important that no one touch it. After period, switch off cooker switch, re-attach earth connection & try now.
If that hour or so doesn’t dry out elements & trip still goes off, i’d check the resistance of elements with a megger, if they are low to earth you may need to fit new elements.

Hi Seamy, that worked a treat. Thanks very much for the advice. Happy days, new oven for £21 😀
