ParticipantHotpoint BU82SS, double oven, built in. Fan in bottom oven not working, however, temp light comes on,top oven and grill all working fine. The thermostat, located top oven, came loose and I saw some slight sparking from it. I turned oven off at mains, pushed the stat back in place and turned oven on. Everything working, apart from fan. Any help much appreciated.

bit vague but i am reading like this
you had a fault with the oven so you turned it off and fixed it.
now when you turned back on the top oven and grill works ok but the main oven does not.
i am also assuming the fan does not work nor does the element2 things
1 if the clock is not set the oven will not work
2 unless the door is closed some of these oven dont come onDave

Many Thanks Dave. Wife was cooking (first mistake)and the stat in top oven was hanging down, like it had been dislodged, some smoke and sparks from stat area. So I turned oven off, pushed stat back into the holders. Everything working, top oven, grill, controls etc. In the bottom oven I can see the element glowing on, yet the fan not turning. Have checked the 2 things you mention..

Sounds like you need to replace the main oven fan motor. It could be clogged up, remove the inner back panel and see if the fan turns freely. If not I would fit a new one

you need to check to see if the fan motor is trying to turn
i do this by putting a skewer through the holes and giving the fan a spin. try it first with it off and it should spin freely. then turn it on and see if it either tries to turn or just spins.
what we are trying to get is a motor that is trying to turn when the power is on but cant. if its trying but cant then the motor is at fault. if it is not trying then it could be motor or switch as it could have been damaged when you got the flash

Also sometimes you may hear a humming noise from inside the oven which is the motor trying to turn

OK. Couple of things. Fan moves freely with oven on and off, also just spotted, after shining torch in oven, that the element is touching the bottom of the oven. So though its glowing and would seem, apparently working, it is on the base of the oven. I am making the quantum leap here that this not as things should be?

Agreed. Simple fix, remove backplate, relocate fan element onto its support bracket. No parts required.

Well, have removed back bottom rear oven panel etc. Fan moved freely, both directions. Stat in place, tho black from time and didn’t appear to be loose or disconnected. So, think it working OK, as when bottom oven on, temp control light turns on and off when temp right, or drops etc. Element had dropped, I moved it off oven floor. When put oven back on, after these investigations, could see element glowing and heat being generated. The fan, alas, not turning, gave it some gentle nudges, but, nothing….
