ParticipantHi,
I sadly have a Samsung RS21, this had the Samsung ‘Fix’ Applied a while ago. It has been running fine for the last couple of years.
Recently we had the usual issue of noisy fan, no cooling, no water from dispenser. Looking around on the internet I found much advice on repairing the beast. I defrosted the unit fully, put it back together and it worked…. For 48 hours… The water system stopped working so I defrosted this bit again, this time I got 24 hours of fresh water ?
The question is what should I need to replace? I read the info on this site which suggested trying error codes – I have none & replacing the whole unit at the back of the fridge with the updated version (which I have!)
Would anyone be able to give me a ‘best guess’ at the part I need to replace now or should I replace the whole unit? Many thanks

Anyone take a stab at the issue?
I would like to get few more months out of the thing before replacing – We maybe moving in 3-6 months, if I can keep this ticking over it would be great. Thanks

hello, what are you referring to when you say the Samsung fix?
is it the samsung modification or that you replaced the evaporator cover?September 21, 2013 at 11:23 am #401287aep

Samsung came out a while ago, there was a modification and I believe they replaced the evaporator cover at the same time.
Whatever the Samsung ‘fix’ was to the known freezing issue was completed by Samsung

Well replacing the evaporator cover is by no means a permanent fix, although they have been modified since the appliance first came out.
It sounds like you have a fault on the defrost circuit, or the evaporator cover again, or maybe even both.September 21, 2013 at 6:28 pm #401289aep

The evaporator cover looks like it just holds a fan unit (is there more to it?) the fan unit appears to be running fine, after the defrost the fridge was chilling fine for a short period then is frosted up again, the defrost circuit sounds like it could be the cause, looking at a your tube video it appears I do not have the latest defrost sensor modification kit, currently this sensor is still on the right hand side of the fridge.
Help is really appreciated!

The insulation fails on the evaporator cover allowing moisture ingression and ultimately freezing up of the cover and the fan motor. If you can hear the fan motor running, then the evaporator cover is probably ok.
Without putting a meter on the components of the defrost circuit, it’s impossible to give you a definitive answer.
Your problem could be with the defrost heater, thermal fuse, defrost sensor.September 21, 2013 at 6:54 pm #401291aep

Thanks Eldar, I have strip it down again next week and put a meter over the key components, when I posted I had not realised there were so many parts that could be in the frame. Such a shame these have so many flaws.

Tested the fridge yesterday, I am no expert with a multimeter but think I have it right.
Thermal Fuse – =Continuity – 0.0
defrost heater
Main= 470
Drain Heater = 2110Defrost Sensor is the white one but on the correct side, testing with
a multimeter show it to be fine.I managed to break the evaporator cover removing it – the edging snapped off in the ice. the whole thing really is rubbish!
I dont really know were to go from here with the components testing okay. The fridge freezes in approx 2 weeks now, water stops in 48 hours, cooling reduces then fan starts making a noise at the 2 week point. I was amazed how much ice there was for such a short period.
Any pointers greatly appreciated

Was the evaporator frosted up?
If it was relatively clear, then it’s likely you need a new evaporator cover.
Obviously, all the components on the defrost circuit are good, the only question mark would be against the sensor, but if the evaporator was clear, a new evaporator cover should remedy your problem.September 29, 2013 at 3:02 pm #401294aep

It was very frosted, I was surprised at how much Ice had formed over such a short space of time. I had Ice everywhere from the evaporator cover – around the fan unit and through the drain right down the back of the unit. As the water “s” bend ices up in 2-3 days would this give any further clues?

No, I mean specifically the evaporator.
If the cover and all around the fan is frosted then it’s the cover that’s at fault. If it’s the evaporator itself that’s heavily iced, then as you’ve already proved the components on the defrost circuit, then your problem will be the sensor.
I suspect anyway, from what you’ve already said, that if you were to buy another cover and a sensor, then your problem would be solved.September 30, 2013 at 7:17 pm #401296aep

ParticipantRe: RS21DGRS fridge freezing issue
long delay in posting anything here.. Since I stripped the fridge down last time it has been running perfect!
The new parts are still in the box! I have no doubt I will need them as there is some damage to the cover, so its only a matter of time but knowing its running okay for the time being is very good!
Thanks for all the help and I will keep this updated
Andrew
