Hello, we’ve got an issue with our (not far out of warranty, but far enough) Condenser Dryer. It was a rather expensive model, because of the energy efficiency and whotnot. I know practically nothing about these things, they go round get warm and clothes come out dry whilst the water goes into a collection recepticle which needs emptying every time.
My wife generally takes care of the operation of the thing, I am sufficiently ignorant enough to possibly cause a hazard to the health of clothes, which suits me fine.
Anyway, a while back it stopped collecting the water, the thing apparently heats up okay, and it goes round and makes all the right noises, but the water isn’t getting collected and hence the clothes they aren’t getting dryer.
Well of course I went back to the manufacturer to try to sort the thing out, they tell me it’s out of warranty and they can sell me some insurance and send an engineer round to fix it if he can.
The engineers been round with my wife in attendance, first of all they replaced the motor, then went away, we thought it had been fixed. Apparently not, resulting in more calls and another visit, this time the same engineer comes round, takes out the motor and tells my wife it’s not fixable because there’s a blockage in the main system works at the bottom of the unit.
He then leaves, taking the motor with him, leaving us to get rid of the tumble dryer and get a replacement, insurance gets cancelled and all that, no money changes hands.
It all seems fairly reasonable to me, apart from the actual problem itself.

I don’t understand, surely if something is blocked then it can be unblocked?
Does anyone have sufficient knowledge of the model have the ability to explain why this is not something that’s simple to repair?

Your machine was a ‘heat pump’ type dryer using a system like a refrigerator in reverse. In that instead of a heating element it uses a pressurised gas circulation system via a compressor and condenser to create heat.

As to what “motor” was replaced then I would think the guy replaced the drain pump. It’s job is to pump the condensed water from the base and into the water container. The most likely reason the water container didn’t fill with water is either the pump is faulty or more usually there is a blockage between the pump chamber and the water container.

“A blockage in the main system works” makes little sense as you stated that the appliance heats OK. And I can only suppose the guy was suggesting the heat pump unit was at fault? A costly fix but I have my suspicions that that is not the reason for the failure but more of an excuse to avoid further repair attempts. Purely speculation on my part based on the information you have given you must understand. 😉
