I am going to ask this query here as I could not find any answers in the buying advice guide.
My current model, a gift in 2007, is a Dyson DC04, which is around 14 – 15 years old now (very surprised). I am happy with it but know it cannot go on. A majority of my customers have Dyson’s and quite a few have Miele’s. Now when I replace the DC04 I will probably not opt for another Dyson, as the models from the last five years or so do not seem as robust (in my opinion), though they have mostly been the cylinder type. With the Miele models I have used, again all cylinder, I was not impressed with the performance, baring in mind that I think of them as a excellent top of the range company in general.
I hear a lot about Sebo, especially here, though have never come across one, so am considering them. But I have not read on this site anyone’s opinion on ye old Henry’s; I grew up in the pub trade and every carpet cleaning firm I have seen not only used them but swore by them. I remember using them my self and thinking that they were decent. Have they deteriorated over the years or are they considered not up to the competition?
Lastly, after build quality, what is considered important when choosing a vacuum cleaner, is it suction power, suction power over motor power. I ask as the models with the highest suction power figures, are models that are produced by manufacturers who I don’t associate with quality/reliability. From experience I prefer uprights and bagged vs bagless does not bother me.
Again your thoughts and advice will be much appreciated, ta.

Sebo, Sebo or Sebo are the options. The X4 an excellent piece of kit far superior to Dyson.

I have owned 3 uprights in the past 12 years or so. Panasonic years ago when they were fairly OK, (but that one long since discontinued) Dyson (plastic bits broke and the flexible pipe split) and now have 2 Sebos – an Airbelt cylinder type, mainly used upstairs, and a Felix upright. Both work extremely well and are better made than most others I’ve seen or used, and both came at the time with 5 year warranties. Add to that the fact that complete sets of spares are readily available if ever needed. They aren’t designed to be disposable items.

I chose the Felix over the X4 because for an upright it is very manoueverable around furniture, and there’s quite a lot in my house. I suspect if you have large clear areas of carpets free of furniture, the X4 would be a good choice.
As to the power rating bit, I don’t think you can necessarily turn power consumed into vacuum effectiveness as other design and probably motor considerations come into play as well.
If you go for a cylinder type and have carpeted areas, the Sebo motorised brushhead gives you similar performance to an upright and possibly a bit more vacuum power too. Having used the turbo brush type supplied by Sebo (and have used the Miele one too) they aren’t nearly as effective.

All dysons should be melted down!

I own a MIele S7 upright which is far superior to any Dyson, and I have had every model in for repair over the years.
The DC01 & 04 were probably the best ones made, after that they are absolute rubbish

I cannot comment on Sebo, but have heard good reviews about them…

I also own a KIrby G5. Which I had second hand, they are a bit on the heavy side, but are built like Sherman tanks…

Thanks for your opinions, have heard of Kirby. It looks like the Sebo X4 (Pet most likely) has my money; fhe Felix range looks lacking in terms of construction for me. Used another Dyson today, DC25 I think, mine feels like it’s hewn from granite in comparison.
Anyone have an opinion on the Numatic clan, at least so I can soundly rule them out.

Numatic do not make upright cleaners 😉 however their tub cleaners like the Henry are the best ones out there for value, ruggedness, performance and lifespan IMO.

    Ta Don

I realise that they don’t do uprights, though I would forgo an upright in the case of the Numatic clan. They are made in Blighty still I think and seem to be held in high regard by those that use them for a living. Three choices to mull over me thinks!

Re: What to consider when buying?

Forgot to ask about a vac for work, building debris etc. I currently have an Earlex combi-vac though I only use it as a wet vac and do not wish to use it for dry suction. I have had an offer on a choice of Karcher models for my non-domestic needs. I generally hold Karcher in high regards for their pressure washers though I do know if this translates to their other goods. Anyone have advice for a dry work vac that can take punishment, ta

Vacuums are somewhat complicated to understand. And the ads doesn’t really help, they make it sound like buying a PC. Anyway floor type, pets or not, house or apartment. Most vacuums will do the job. If you want to get a really decent vac, Miele will do the job. They have good priced models that are valuable for their price.
