    Hi

    I am new to the forum and hope to gain a little help with a fault that has developed recently on our dishwasher.

    The unit is built in and has been in the house since we bought it 5 years ago. At a guess the dishwasher is about 8 plus years old.

    It is reasonably well looked after and doesn’t have any obvious knocks or squeels

    At some stage during the wash cycle, the machine trips the RCD on the main fuse board. I am certain it is the dishwasher as it only does it when the machine is mid cycle and the trip resets only when the dishwasher is turned off.

    Last time we used the dishwasher I notes that the water was hot which makes me think it is not the heater and might be arcing of a switch.

    I am fairly handy in terms of making and repairing things mechanical and electrical but would appreciate any assistance in advance of taking it to bits.

    Could well be the heater, you need the appliance tested with an insulation tester

    Nevertheless the heater is the main suspect. Needs checking with an insulation test meter. Power off, time to go inside…….

    Thank you all.

    Just seen the heating element on flea bay for £22 😀

    It looks like a take it out and turn it upside down sort of a job, 😕 so will test at the weekend.

    Having removed the dish washer from it’s comfy built in spot I can now have a good look at it.

    Before I carry out any surgery, thought it might be a good idea to get some expert advice on where the heater is and the best way to get at it without removing any necessary lumps.

    I have quite a good space to work in and can turn the machine upside down now that all the water is completely gone.

    If anyone has any tips on other maintenance to carry out while it is in bits that would be great also.

    This is going to be a bit of a journey which I will be grateful to share!!!

    Tip it on its side and take the base off. Power off though

    Thanks for the tip.

    I have removed the heater, which was reasonably straight forward as the hoses and clips are in good condition. 😮

    The heater is visually in good shape, but I would like to test it before replacement in case the fault lies elsewhere. :rolls:

    Is this something I can test with my trusty multi-meter or will I require a professional appliance tester. :eeek:

    Replaced the heater, but unfortunately the dishwasher is still blowing the main RCD mid cycle.

    Heater is good.

    The pump seems ok as it runs early on in cycle.

    No leaks on to electrics.

    Can anyone suggest where to look for the problem next pls?

    You’re gonna need an 500dcV insulation tester to locate the earth leak causing the RCD to trip. (A 9volt multi tester won’t show it up.)

    Thanks Martin.

    I am running the machine this morning to see if it cuts out at the same dial setting every time.

    So far it has gone through the A and B programmes, which are the pot settings, no problem but seems to trip on the C programme.

    Just trying to figure out what goes on during the light wash (C) programme that doesn’t happen during the longer washes.

    Temp is 65C throughout so still scratching my head 😕

    I think I can borrow a tester but not sure what to do with it, might be an extension to my learning curve.

    I have mis-diagnosed this a little.

    the machine is throwing the trip mid programme on B and C settings now. Something happens after the wash cycle but I need to sit and watch it to see exactly what is going on when it trips, wish I had time for that.

    Something to do with the rinse possibly

    I assumed with the word ‘plumber’ in your name you were a plumber? Plumbers would need a Megger to check out electric showers, immersion heaters and heating pumps as part of their toolkit.
