Participantis their a standard rate , our apprentice is starting to get a bit shirty etc the usual he thinks he should be on more bla bla bla
he still on reduced calls , only really does laundry , no refrigeration skill yet , has a gas ticket but we dont use him on the gas side yet .- he got ticket when working with his dad as fitter .
he starting to compare his wage with his girlfriend office work and what the other engineers earn .
im kinda stuck as he wants more but i dont want to fling him in the deep end and have the reverse effect .
hes currently on £250 p/week at the top – i dont know if this is good bad or ugly .
but im going to have a chat with him and advise industry standards based on skill etc – if anyone can shed some light / wisdom i would appreciate it

I believe 13 to 15 grand is the basic starting rate these days.

Keep danglin’ that carrot in front of them.
I watched that programme on Amazon last night so if they don’t like carrots Amazon are always seeking slave labour in their warehouse.

Peanuts seem to be the going rate, might explain some of the monkeys.

weve gave him a bonus scheme so we will see where that leads , personally im for and against bonus – you need intrinsic motivation – but i suppose money is a great motivator.

you are omitting to say his age and if on a apprentice program will be going to college once a week or so, correct? means you can pay a lot less than a going wage for an engineer. £13k is a good wage for an apprentice 18-19 years old.

Factor in the extra cost of van insurance, if under what is these days 65…was 21 then 25. And the early years damage he will probably pick up and weekend fuel, he wont use. Lots of hidden costs.
The van insurance seems to be the biggest hurdle to employing any young engineer.
Which is a shame.November 28, 2013 at 8:36 am #405230ELDAR59

vehicle insurance these days is legalised robbery and seems to work all one way.
perhaps it’s worth a whole new thread on it’s own to see if anyone has a better option than most of us at the moment.November 28, 2013 at 9:52 am #405231funkyboogy

when i was an apprentice out on my own doing calls i was on around £200 a week, granted this was 15 years ago but at the time it was a good wage, i was also on a bonus which i was very happy with, basically i got 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of what i earned after a certain amount, usually worked out about £50 a week but was a great incentive to drive me on.
if your lad is doing indesit work etc then it might not work out this way but id defo recommend some form of bonus e.g. right first time or something.

yeh a little bonus is a great carrot , he does a mix of calls so its hard to get the bonus mix correct , ie long duration’s etc .
right now im testing him to see if he has the temperament to accept the way things work – he should know as hes shadowed an engineer for a year.
he a good kit but like everything attitude , motivation and temperament will decide his future right now
