ParticipantDecided to semi retire at christmas now I’m an OAP but got bored on Friday and switched the phone on -usuaally good for a couple of blocked pumps etc .Got a carbon brush job and a guy saying his cooker had tripped the fuse. Turned up to the fuse job at a farm shop to find a four plate industrial cooker,I asked if it tripped straight away when they switched it on they said no.So reset the trip switched and switched off the oven and the plates to try and isolate the fault each individually.Switched cooker on and it tripped the mains -so we had a bad earthing fault or a dead short. The fellow that owned the shop said it had done it before and it was fat behind the right hand panel so I pulled the cooker out and the sides were caked in fat, screws at the back were baked in and rounded off but managed to ease the side off from the fat.I looked at the wiring loom for breaks and tested the oven elements the top one was open circuit but the bottom ones Ok no earth leaks on any.I also checked the terminal block.I couldnt access the the simmerstats and plates because the the screws were rounded and baked in.By this time Im not happy with guy breathing down my neck and the state of the cooker so I decided to put it back together and diplomatically tell him that it was too filthy and everything looked a bit dodgy.I was struggling to put the sides on due to the fat when he said ‘so we’re no further forward I think you better pick up your tools and bugger off’.Ididnt say anything just left the sides off and the terminal cover picked up my tools and walked as I got to the door he said ‘I’m going to sue you for wilful damage’.My retort was I dont think the health people would be happy with that cooker at which he shook his fist.Ho Hum a wasted couple of hours but this morning at 9 o clock this joker is on the phone saying I have two choices-to pay him for a new cooker or he will sue me to the Crown Court and I better surrender my passport as I cant leave the country also he had an engineer and a solicitor to look at the cooker.Am afraid I laughed at him – but where on earth do these people come from.

I normally ask the customer that they should ensure that the cooker/oven is clean. If the cooker is not relatively clean, I charge for an aborted call (of which they are pre-advised).
If everything is caked in fat etc, I think that it is unreasonable to be expected to work on it.

The countries full of chancers and idiots ,i had one before xmas fitted a new heater to a samsung american because it was o/c priced first and accepted, got a call a few days later saying fridge not cold ,returned to find the fan had packed up ,had one on the van so not wanting to get into an argument decided to fit f.o.c left the old one with the mrs of the house and left ,not happy i had to give a part away but thinking at least he wont be moaning about an extra charge when he gets in from work or so i thought :rolls: .He rings the next day to rant its all working but not happy as the fan i had fitted before was clearly second hand ,office refer him to his invoice which clearly states that it was a defrost heater that was replaced and not a fan motor and it had failed after we left but had been changed as a gesture of goodwill f.o.c .Now at this point you would think he would realise his mistake and apologise but not this fella ,he then launches into a further rant about how he had been ripped off and no company can afford to give parts away f.o.c and he is going to take it further, trading standards etc,etc ,as the office refused to get into an argument with him he eventually put the phone down on them not to be heard from again …bizarre some people…Cras

The best one I had was a call to a fridge repair for an 82 year woman.
The fridge was a built in fridge and about 17 years old and had seen better days.
The compressor had seized and I advised her I could replace the compressor but due to the age and condition of the fridge she would be better spending the money on a new one.
I advised her I only repair and do not sell appliances and she asked how much she owed for the call out.
I normally charge a half price call for BER appliances but advised her I had to pass her house on the way home so I would not charge her for the visit as it was BER.
About an hour later I had a call from her very angry Daughter saying I had upset her mother as I had not charged her for the visit.
She said her Mum does not except charity.
She said she would send a cheque in the post for a full call out fee and would not recommend or use my services again.
I would have expected a call from her Daughter if she thought I had charged her Mum and not repaired it but for a free of charge call the mind boggles. 😀
I received the cheque in the post next day so she must have put it in the post straight away.

The fact so many complain means most call centres are fed up of listening to the stories and most are ignored.
Apart from one company who believes they know how, the crap recently hit the fan as they got in excess of 30,000 complaints.
The top dog now personnally reads the complaints. Hope the investors dont find out, all that time reading complaints from what most of us would describe as chav’s with few brains and large mouths may result in some financial issues. Afterall the real people now shop at John Lewis.

You can see from a number of threads on here that the problem seems to be on the rise and, that’s even allowing for the usual lunatics that pop up at this time of the year.
Nowadays it seems an all year round sport, not just a winter event.
Evidence would seem to indicate that this is the case. It would also suggest that the problem is on the rise, in some ways quite dramatically.
A big topic for the next meeting in March. 😉

One company has a solution to the issue, since there convinced complaints are a staff issue they have introduced a scheme of surveying clients after a visit. Points are awarded and that means the staff or rather dogs a rewarded with a treat.
Only problem is the staff getting less points are now telling tales on other staff, so as too look better.
So now both staff and clients are complaining.
