ParticipantHi, thanks for welcoming me to the forum. I’m hoping someone can confirm whether or not I ruined the fridge that I recently bought secondhand. I am quite confident that it was working when I bought it, but I think I may have tilted it too much bringing it back in the car!
It does cool a bit, the compressor is running & the stat seems to work, but the freezer is just above freezing – about 3c, the fridge about 14c, and no amount of running, settling, switching off or otherwise has improved it much yet. Can anyone tell me what exactly the fault caused by tilting a fridge is, and whether I have any chance of recovering the system?
Thanks in advance, I’ve searched all over the net but surprisingly i can’t find anything conclusive on tilted fridges!

If it was tilted in transport then run immediately or shortly after being righted then it’s probably dragged oil up into the refrigerant system and, in effect, it will be beyond economical repair.
Sorry.

Ok, thanks for the reply K. I did settle it for quite a while but I think this is the problem still. I just didn’t know you shouldn’t tilt a fridge! If I have done that then, is there no hope atall, or can the oil be pushed through, or in any way coaxed back to where it belongs?! I get the principles of sealed fridge system, but I don’t know enough to decide whether the oil could ever be drawn back!
Thanks again & any more opinions or advice is very welcome.
🙂

Some times a blockage of oil can be cleared but you risk the chance of some oil remaining and blocking again.
This involves a total Regas and clearing the system of oil.
If it has been running for a time with a blockage this also puts stress on the compressor seals so you may also have problems with the compressor not pumping correctly. The cost to try and repair is not worth repairing this type of fridge / freezer.
