    Hi

I’m hoping for some help/advice and I apologise for the length of my post.

We have just bought a house and thrown in with the deal is a 2008 Rangemaster SxS Fridge-Freezer. We were told this fridge-freezer was faulty and that it works but doesn’t make ice. A repair was attempted but failed because ice-maker brackets are no longer available.

However, after using the unit we have established it also has a number of other problems that is perhaps contributing to the lack of ice…

    1. There is a big temperature difference between the top and bottom freezer shelf. With freezer set at -19oC the temperature on the bottom shelf is -24oC and temperature on top shelf under ice-maker unit is -7oC. Temperature of door shelf at same level as icemaker part is +5oC – which isn’t right!?
    2. Freezer temperature gauge shows rapid temperature rise when door is open. Door was left ajar for just a few minutes (accident) and temp display showed +2oC! It took 12 hours before reading -19oC again.
    3. Fridge seems to be working fine and maintaining the +5oC no problems.
    4. We’re not too bothered that the ice-maker isn’t working but we would like a constant temperature throughout the freezer. Although I suspect the reason the ice isn’t working is because the top is so warm!

    So, my question is…

Do you think a fan has failed in the Freezer or could these number of problems be more symptomatic of another problem?

I understand these fridges are badly made chinese units with expensive parts? I don’t want to spend £200 on it to find it develops another fault.

Any help, guidance will be gratefully appreciated!

    Many thanks,
    Chris

Do YOU hear the fan running, it may be indeed faulty. Have you tried totally defrosting it as fan may be blocked by ice build up for instance. Defrost it for 48 hours and see if it works o.k then, report back then.

    Thanks for the reply.

I can’t hear a fan running but not sure how loud it should be or where I should be listening – can you advise? If I move slide the unit out should I be able to see it anywhere?

I haven’t yet trying defrosting it either, its full of food. I will try though, it is a good suggestion.

    Hi

What details IE the model and serial number and where was it made ? This is on the label normally somewhere in the fridge section as there is a choice of 3 different manufacturers or your unit.

Do you know where the Main PCB is located ?

Can you post a photo of the ice maker and the fridge section controls ?

Photos below. Serial is 7911000844, made in China… I’m not sure where the main PCB is, does it vary on these models?

    Final picture shows temperature difference.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi

I would be prepared to say that it’s either the defrost heater failure or the evaperator fan, both in the freezer compartment

    Hi Bryan,

Many thanks for responding and pointing me in a direction where I’m beginning to make some sense of the problem. What sort of cost would you estimate for both of those repair jobs?

Are parts easy to come by for these units?

    Thanks,
    Chris

I’ve had a think with regards to the suggestions and perhaps the following info might help:

Freezer temp doesn’t seem to be deteriorating, if the defrost heater had failed wouldn’t the freezer be getting worse and worse or does it just reach a plateau??

I have noticed the back of the fridge ices up, I didn’t notice our old frost free fridge doing this?

I think the only way to prove it is to defrost it and see if works for a period?

    Cheers,
    Chris
