I was looking for ways on how to learn to do refrigeration repairs and have been googling about. I came across this which is in pdf format, I do not know if this is still relevant but it looks basic despite that it might looks out of date possibly 20 or 30 years. I am not an expert, it does looks fairly easy to follow.

What are your thoughts on this?

This is in public domain under the world health organisation.

Things have moved on a lot since this was published R12 is no longer used and you need city and guilds 2078 and 2079 for safe handling of refrigerants if you work on any systems other than R600a.

R600a is a flammable gas so this also needs safety training for handling this gas.

If a R600a system has been opened and not Factory sealed you also have to have city & Guilds 2079 as you can no longer assume it is R600a in the System.

Most modern fridge freezers are now frost free and electronically controlled so fault finding is now completely different to the old way.

Even with all the Training you need to have experience to get to no the faults a modern frost free fridge freezer can have.

You should be able to get more up to date publications of refrigerant systems for the safe handling of refrigerants from your local college or Bridgewater College

But this does not cover the electronics or defrost systems.

Speak to Ian Dales is my advice because, even if he can’t help you directly, he’ll know where to go.

    Secondly, Bryan Williams, same.

Thanks, I already know of Bryan. To be honest it’s quite costly to attend such training courses. This was why I was apprehensive about it and looked for other way.

Such courses come at a cost of £1,000 plus. How do I know it’s good value?

I often get calls for fridge freezer needing attention.

I will contact the two men and see what they can do.

Re: Stumbled across this whilst looking for fridge training

A couple of years ago there was talk of Ian Dales sorting training in conjunction with the WTA. I enquired a few times but never did hear the outcome. I’m wanting to do a refrigeration course but its the locality of it more than the cost. Any news…

Makes good reading, especially how to use a compressor as a vacuum pump…
World Health Organization health warning…. ” bend the tube away from you, so that the escaping refrigerant R12 does not get onto your face”
