ParticipantHi
My Samsung RS20CCMS Fridge/Freezer does not seem to be defrosting and is filling with ice in the defrost drain hole where the heater element sits.
I have tested the defrost heater element for continuity via connecter (2) in the picture and get a reading of 460 ohms – is this correct?

Assuming the element is okay then ..
I need to test the defrost thermostat which i think is (1) — what should it read and do i have to test it at zero degrees?
… and .. I will need to test the thermal fuse which i think is (3) – again what should it read and do i test it at any particular temperature? — I tested this for continuity and it read zero.

PS.. For some reason the image seems to be getting cropped — this is the linkhttp://i.imgur.com/wnNq6Q2.jpg to view it in all its glory

If it is just the drain freezing up it will be the drain heater faulty.
This heater is at the bottom in the picture.

Hi, firstly – thanks for the answers.
@Samuri – I assumed that the heater was ok as it showed continuity on the multimeter@r600a – Change the “defrost sensor” – would this be ‘No1’ in the images . This gave a reading of ‘1’ at room temperature when tested for resistance.
Would this be the correct part ?

Did you check both heaters as 2 heaters on this model main defrost heater on the evaporator and drain heater on the bottom.
The sensor is no 1 on your photo and the sensor is the one on the WTA shop link you have given.
If the main defrost heater is working it defrost but the drain at the bottom blocks with ice if the bottom heater is not working.

No I only checked the bottom heater above the drain, did not see another heater – not sure where that lives (any ideas). The bottom heater
was actually sat in a block of ice when i removed the plastic cover – the evaporation tubes were totally frost/ice free so I presumed that
the either the bottom heater was broken or it was not switching on.January 26, 2014 at 8:40 pm #408456SAMURI

If it was in a block of ice then the bottom heater is faulty. The top heater is on the evaporator it runs around the evaporator.
This top heater is working ok if it was not the evapoator would be covered in soft white frost.
It is defrosting but as the bottom heater is not working as it defrost the water refreezesThe two centre tubes are the evaporator tubes that cools with the refrigerant.
The outer tubes on the evaporator / front and back are the heater.
In your picture near the sensor you will see the wires leading to this top heater.
One black and one red wire near the silver tape.Bob

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the help so far.
I duly ordered a defrost sensor – but when i received it i got no reading on my multimeter. Turns out my multimeter
is defunct. So after purchasing a new one I can now give corrected readingsTop Plug — Themostatic Fuse 0.00/tone
Middle Plug — Top Heater 141
Bottom Plug — Defrost Sensor 13.0 coldBottom Heater — Top Right Plug 430
Is it safe to bypass the thermostat to force the heater to come on?
How can i test the timer circuit? Cannot seem to find it around the back of the unit — is it in the fridge section?
Also notice a mild build of ice forming on the wiring – not dusting but solid water globules (frozed solid drips of water). Evaporator was very slightly coated in frostJanuary 29, 2014 at 7:07 pm #408458SAMURI

The bottom heater will be the fault as from your discription of the fault the main heater is working so the defrost sensor and thermal fuse will be ok.

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply, one thought I have is that if the heater is testing okay then maybe the circuit is just not getting switched on.
Does the bottom and top heater get switched on separately? Is there a way i can test the bottom heater – eg bridge a connection to force it to come on?
The bottom heater looks rivetted on – does this mean i have to grind it off, how does the new one fit? bolts??
Sorry for all the questions

Hi
Again my first point of call on this model as its the most common fault is the defrost sensor.
They commonly give false readings.

Hi again,
Thanks for all the help so far – I shall purchase a new one from you in due-course.
Before I do – is there anywhere i can see a guide to removal as it seems rivetted on?
Do I have to grind it off and then bolt a new one on or does a new one come with a fixing kit?Sorry for all the questions – cannot thank you enough so far btw

Ive replaced it (the defrost sensor – orig white one with new black one), so i guess i shall have to just wait and see if the problem reoccurrs.
I was wondering if there is a way to bridge the sensor and force the heating element to warm up that way i could confirm there is nothing wrong with
the heating element. -
