ParticipantHi there,
My dishwasher ‘tap light’ turned red recently and after finding a bit of glass down inside filter area it then worked fine for a few weeks.
After a few weeks the tap light reappeared. The machine seemed to be filling and emptying but didn’t sound quite right so I replaced the impeller jug as per advice i’d read from previous posts. This has made no difference.
When testing the machine, it initially appeared try and empty, but is now not emptying at all. The impeller on the pump isn’t blocked, I managed to access it, check for debris / blockages. It also seems to turning because when I turn the machine on ‘to initiate’ draining, but when I open the machine the water in the filter basin is circulating (from the filter i assume) but just not draining.
Is is the drain pump I need to replace? I checked for a blockage on the waste pipe, disconnected and blew through and everything seems ok.
Rather than spend more money on parts – I thought id check with some experts. Please advice!
Many thanks
Liam

The pump must be working from what you say. It’s the first component that functions at the start of every cycle so there must be something else blocking it. OR you haven’t refitted the pump cover properly. The pump access panel gives limited access and you may have to resort to pulling the machine out and removing the metal base for even better access. 💡

Yes, I did pull the whole machine and took the metal base off to check the pump / impellor wasn;t blocked. I was expecting to find some debris in the impellor but it was clear. It all seems ok, but I can check it again tomorrow…..i’m at the extent of my diy skills now, so hoping for an easy resolution.
The pump clicked and fitted back in nicely. I also took off the drain hose from the side of the machine and blew through, it seemed clear. Is there anywhere else I should check for a blockage.
Could there be a pump be blocked behind the impellor?
Cheers
Liam

Liam, could you confirm for me first that the pump IS working? That at the start of the cycle you can at least hear it running?
That being the case (and as I mentioned in my previous post) there is either a blockage somewhere in the drain system OR that pump inspection cover is either missing or not fitted in place properly.

Yes that wasn’t clear…
I can hear the pump running at the start of the cycle. What I meant is that if the pump drain (impellor area) appeared to be clear can any other part of it be causing the issue.
I’ll check the inspection cover. Provided that it is fitted correctly, how would I go about checking for a blockage in the system?

First remove the non-return valve (in the outlet of the pump chamber) then blow through the end of the drain hose. (I, being in the trade, use a compressed air sink plunger device the would clear ear wax out of a bull elephant). That should flush it out or at least confirm it was clear before refitting the non-return valve.
Just out of curiosity, if the drain hose shares the sink waste outlet, do thoroughly check that that isn’t the problem. 9 out of 10 cases it is.
