We purchased our Miele KDN12823S fridge/freezer (frost free) in June 2011. Recently the temperature alarm goes off, often in the middle of the night. The fridge has now had a complete identity change and is now freezing everything whereas the freezer is now more like the fridge. It has now completely given up.
The compressor at the back is very hot to touch and some of the pipes coming out it appear to have attracted some lime scale deposits (water here is very hard and full of limescale anyway). After switching it off for a night it seemed to repair itself, but now it just doesn’t work at all. 🙁
After reading the frost free fridge freezer the help section I am not holding out much hope that this problem can be easily diagnosed here but wondered if anyone had issues with this brand and whether it is worth buying a replacement thermostat online and getting someone local to install it.

In the fridge section if you press the back wall of the fridge near the top does it feel spongy ?.
If there is movement on the wet wall then the appliance is not repairable.
From your discription it sounds like it has lost the refrigerant and the wet wall inside the fridge may have blown.

Thanks for your reply. Inside the fridge at the back wall it is just solid plastic…nothing feels spongy at the top and there is no movement. At the moment the freezer is working but not the fridge.
For a long while the wet wall at the back of the fridge was frozen and water was not evaporating as maybe I think it should have been….

I should also mention that prior to this happening the compressor was making very loud huming sounds which would then cut out. I am attempting a 48hr defrost (of my frost free freezer!) if that doesn’t work I think it is probably a bust compressor attempting to work overtime…..

This sounds like the compressor may be getting hot and cutting out on the thermal overload due to being low on refrigerant.
It is worth trying the defrost but if it was freezing the fridge before the fridge stopped working it could be the sign the refrigerant has been leaking.
Keep us updated after you have defrosted it.

No joy whatsoever with the defrost, now the fridge and freezer are not working.
If the refrigerant has been leaking I take it is not worth getting it repaired?
Costs for Miele call out are £117 plus parts and that is only for 1 hours work.

It is most likely an internal leak on this model and internal leaks are not repairable.
I would say it is better to put the £117 plus towards a new fridge.

That is horrendous considering the cost of one 😯 I thought Miele stuff was supposed to last decades thus justifying the price, not <3 years 👿
I need a new fridge freezer of about this size and to be honest I am now utterly confused about what to buy.
