oily smell

Hi. Anyone got any idea please. A 12 year old Hoover washing machine that smell of WD40 from inside the drum. And yes at 12 years any smell is possible I know, but not come across this one before. Only thing she could offer up that has happened 8 weeks ago which predates this smell was a towel that was washed that had half a bottle of nail remover spilt on it…..but acetone don`t smell like WD40 oil smell.
