wondering if anyone can explain the significance of the coloured marks on carbon brush holders e.g green, white, red, some just plain black. I’m referring to the zanussi and whirlpool types which seem identical except for the coloured marking. Are they made from a different grade of carbon perhaps?

No the various colours only due to different motor and pattern brush holder manufacturers. Zem, Sole, FHP, Haier, Siemens and so on.They do not represent different grades of carbon.

I know what you mean Tom, you are talking about the painted dot or stripe rather than the colour of the housing, right? Probably some truth in what you have said about compound and hardness maybe related to motor rpm? but I don’t think worth worrying over, if the angle is correct then just fit them.
