ParticipantHi guys, I could do with some expert pointers. Just using the above washer when during the spin cycle it starting to make a fair bit of noise. As it slowed it also started to squeak a fair bit then there was an almighty bang and it stopped working.
Lots of smoke followed so I whipped the supply out and took off the top to check there wasn’t any fire hazzard but nothing obvious.
The smoke continued for a while and trying to trace its origin was a bit difficult but when I opened the drum it was pretty full of smoke.
Any experienced ideas would be very welcome.
Cheers Jim

Loose inner drum struck the heating element perhaps? Motor burnt out even? Sounds like a scrapper anyway 🙁

Just had another look and the drum is spinning as normal.I let it run in the garden through a full spin cycle and it seems to get up to speed Ok.
Once again though some sort of smoke filled the drum.
Not sure it’s the bearings though as the drum seems to be spinning at a fair old speed.
Bit of a bitch as my head says scrap it in case of fire but calling someone out may well cost me a few bob and I may end up scrapping it afterwards anyway.

At a guess I’d say a cracked drum spider. Was it a loud banging noise ??

For the past two washes the machine made a fair old rattling noise when it started to spin. On the last wash it made the same noise then there was a single loud bang that I heard from upstairs. When I got down there was a bit of smoke seeping from the top. Most of the smoke though seemed to be on the inside of the drum, once I opened the door.
Whats the drum spider?April 24, 2014 at 3:39 pm #412815Martin

I’ve taken the machine outdoors though and tried it again on a spin cycle and it seems to work fine.
I gets up to full speed but then the smoke starts to appear again and it’s mainly visible in the drum when I open the door?

Grab hold of the inner drum, if it has any up and down movement on its spindle then that is your problem.
