    Re: WTA in the news

    Thanks for that Sreve

    I loved this bit….

Hannah Davies is a trading standards officer with Birmingham City Council.

She points out that consumer law does not underwrite six years of use, as is commonly believed.

She says it depends how much you paid for the product, and how much you have used it.

“Let’s say you paid £199 for a washing machine and used it three to four times a day every day for four or five years, then the court would probably say that you have had enough use out of that product. But if you had spent £1,000 and used your machine for a minimal amount of time, the law would probably say you would be entitled to a refund of part of the amount or a repair.”

I wonder who “the law” is that can sit in judgement of a £1,000 machine failing within 6 years???

Guess whom the legal advisor to Birmingham TS is?

As to Martins question about who “the law” is, well, TS officers, if they believe they have a strong enough case pursue matters through the Magistrates Courts, so the law deciders in that case are, normal, every day, reasonable people serving there local communities free of charge, called Magistrates!

Sadly though, TS officers rarely take such action on an individual by individual basis.

Good to see the WTA actually got a good mention as the team work really hard to do right by all in this industry.

Indeed so hence my questioning the fatuous reference to “the law” in that article. It engenders the public into thinking the ‘6 year rule’ has some foundation when in truth it can never be the case.

One other absurd misconception is that if you purchase a product that is 3 times more expensive than similar brands then it must be a better product. They refer to the washing machine but no doubt the same applies to other kitchen appliances, from the toaster to the tumble dryer. Presumably one could argue then that if that toaster costs more than 3 times the price of others and fails within 6 years…………?

(I bought a new jug kettle for the office for a fiver the other day, they also had one there costing 100quid..!!! I’m guessing my cheap one will still outlast the fancy one all the same and give Currys a bollocking when it goes phut inside 6 yrs :clown: )

    Re: WTA in the news

Isn’t it nice though to see accurate reporting? 😉

Martin, I know where you’re going but the premise is misguided.

Once explained by a man in a hi-fi shop many years ago to me in relation to CD players as a proper bit of hi-fi kit like this…

If you buy a £200 CD player it will be miles better than the cheap £100 or less junk you can buy in Currys or Comet etc.

If you buy a player at £500 it will perform better by an order of magnitude.

But, as you go up beyond that the differences between the products in terms of performance are marginal and the benefit in terms of performance start to become far more subjective. However, the build quality and the care put into the product is massively higher than the lower priced units.

Of course there is badge engineering there as well as there is in our industry but, it’s at this point that the likes of ourselves and decent sales people come in that can actually advise people with superior knowledge of the machines. In part this is removed in the selling process online and in the large retailers so people will very often hold that very perception that the £10 kettle is just the same thing as a £100 kettle because nobody can explain why.

In just the same way that, on paper, a £160 Bush washer is the same as a £300 Bosch or a £700 Miele. Even although we all know full well that this is simply not true.

More complex than that I know but I’m sure you’ll get what I’m on about.

Of course I do Ken, as do most of us in the trade (except perhaps those that still have a Hotpoint appliance droning in their kitchen :wink : )

It was just more especially the ‘6yr thing’ I was trying to put across as, for the most part at least, it being a nonsense. But still one that is bandied about in the publics mindset.

(The jug kettle was just in jest although the 100quid KitchenAid kettle is seriously over engineered I reckon) 😀

    Re: WTA in the news

There were more this morning, people posting pictures of their old trusty appliances.

I’m sure I can beat this women of Hotpoint dishwasher of 20 odd years old. I attended a dishwasher job few years ago which was a Servis dishwasher in full working order and this one was 40 years old. I believe it is still in working order.

I’m sure we all have encountered appliances that are in great condition for its age that will trump those pictures on BBC news.

……meanwhile it is good to know that the WTA is getting noticed. And that the biggest website in the UK has indirectly given the WTA a mention. All good 😀
