ParticipantI will use the recognised format to ask about a specfic problem instead of my previous ramblings:
This auto defrost larder fridge is no longer very good at keeping temperature low enough. It used to be OK set to about 3, which is also marked as N- i.e. normal, if it got turned up above that things could freeze at the back near the bottom.
A month or two ago thing started to go off a bit quickly and stuff did not feel that cold, and on checking the little temperature sticker inside no longer said ‘OK’. Now it will just about stay cold enough if it is kept closed and set to 4, but in normal use if it is set to 5, i.e. maximum, it still struggles: is this the thermostat or something more expensive? The door seals seem OK.

With cooling in a fridge, a lot depends on its method of delivering the cooling. With you saying it is an auto defrost type, I assume you have a fan circulating the cold air. If this is the case I would check the fan is working and that the evaporator hasn’t become overwhelmed with ice. This could be due to a defrost element or thermal fuse failure. It could also be due to the door not being closed properly at some time.

Hi Steve, thanks for getting back to me on this one.
I know nothing :rolls: but it does not have any obvious vent where a fan would blow through and I have never heard a fan. It normally has a slight trace of frost and frozen droplets on the back wall, then sporadically these will melt and drain away through the drain hole in the back of the cabinet, leading out to an evaporation tray on the top of the compressor. Once or twice the drain hole got blocked and we got a puddle on the floor and inside the bottom of the cabinet. Maunual defrosting is never necessary.
It is a larder only fridge, no freezer, not even an ice box. We unplugged it for a couple of days the other week and this has made no difference to its performance as far as I can tell.
I think it is around 6-8 years old so maybe it has just had its time…

Ok that’s different then. You have get a wet wall. Which radiates cold while the compressor is running and then defrost the build up of frost/ ice that builds up while it’s not running.
So is the compressor running all the time?
If so I would guess that you fridge is leaking refrigerant.

Thanks again Steve,
Looking at the Reevoo website reviews they are all from 2006-2007 so I guess ours is 7-8 years old.
I found this advice:
“If the fridge cools a little on a fridge freezer and the freezer section seems okay then it can also be a sign that there is either a blockage or a shortage of gas. Please note that a gas shortage will not manifest itself magically after a few years unless there has been physical damage to the pipework.
Basically this is pretty much an experts area, but the causes are as follows in the main:
Shortage of gas on appliances under a year old
Blockage or choke in pipework
Changeover valve faulty
Compressor pumping weak (highly likely on older machines 8 years or more old)”On this page: http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/fix- … ezers.html
So I think it really has done its time and I should take it to the recycling centre anyway.
To be fair it has been reliable until now, the only issue being the quality of the plastics, e.g. the two smaller salad drawers which both cracked at the front when being lifted up with modest loads in, and the big bottle shelf in the door which finally gave way last year and caused a milk tidal wave across the kitchen floor 😯
