ParticipantIn July 2013, I had new brushes installed as posted here. I mentioned the machine sounded sparky – I suppose by that, I meant there was a sort of high pitched scraping. I was assured that this was just the brushes bedding in. Sure enough, the noise went away and has been fine ever since – until yesterday.
The machine was on program #2 (cottons stains), 60c and 1600rpm selected. It seemed to struggle to balance the load, giving up and hopping straight onto a rinse once.
Anyway, I put some items in to help balance the load. The machine balanced and started to spin. Then came the high pitched scraping noise again – as the machine built-up speed, along came the water coming out the drawer. I could hear the cold water pipe banging as the solenoid was going on and off, so I reduced the spin speed to about 600rpm.
Eventually the noise stopped, so I put the spin speed back to 1600rpm. It was a little noisy, but not as bad and it quickly went away.
Now I am worried about what’s happened and want to try and get to the bottom of the cause so as to avoid potential damage to the machine. Could it just be the motor was hot, especially in yesterday’s heat? Or could I have cheap and nasty brushes that should be replaced with decent ones?
Maybe I’m just worrying over nothing, but I hope that it was just a glitch or I’m in need of a simple fix.

Oh dear! The motor needs looking at again, best not use it meanwhile. Ambient temperature has little or no effect on a motor by the way. However doing several wash loads back to back without a break between cycles can be very harmful. I hope that was not the case in this instance?

At the moment it is working fine, no arcing noise. The machine only did two washes yesterday and there were a few hours between each wash.
What do you think has happened, or is it just a one-off?

I’ve re-read your first post and didn’t realise the water in the dispenser bit. 🙁
I’m thinking then that the drain filter/pump needs inspecting for blockages first of all.

I’ve set it away on another cottons stains 40c cycle @ 1600rpm with an extra rinse. I’ve deliberately done this to labour the machine. If the problem occurs again, I will take a video – hopefully this will show you better than I am explaining!

Don’t bother with the video just a full and accurate account if what happens will suffice. Have you checked the filter by the way? After all said and done that is the first thing one should be sure of checking. 😉

Ok, I’m bumping this thread so people have an idea of the machine’s history. I hope bumping is allowed.
Tonight the machine had difficulty balancing the load for the final spin. So I put a towel in, which happened to be enough for it to balance the load for it to start spinning.
Anyway I noticed as the machine span up, that tapping noise of the solenoids started again – the motor sounded a little noisy, but I didn’t think it was too bad. The tapping settled, but I’m weary of the constant on/off of the water damaging my new boiler.
It is becoming apparent to me that this could be heat related. Hot weather, laboured motor – they don’t agree with this machine!
If I bought a Motor Commutator Cleaner and [Genuine] Washing Machine Carbon Brushes, would this put my problem to rest? The plan would be to clean the commutator then install genuine Bosch brushes – is there anything else I can to “service” or clean the motor, bearing in mind I’m not very technically minded (so wouldn’t be stripping the motor down!)?
Part of me is tempted to buy a new motor and call it a day. Would a new motor come complete with new brushes? Do UK Whitegood stock the motor, Bosch part #00145149, which is the replacement for Bosch part #00144507? If not, can they get it in stock cheaper than what Bosch ask for it, here?
Once again, thanks for everyone for helping.

The solenoids “tapping” during a spin cycle is a very odd fault, not one I have ever come across. Also you never answer my posts about checking the filter. So, if I were you I would concentrate on resolving this issue first and shelve plans of buying a new motor. Water spilling from the dispenser and valves tapping could indicate a blocked filter or blocked ball valve in the sump hose. And it is important you check this out first.
We can gather that the motor does in fact work albeit noisy and it would also be handy to know if it sparks at all during the spin phase? Remove the front plastic inspection panel and observe the motor to check.
Finally, do please let use know the full ENr number of the machine (label inside the door) thank you.

As far as I can tell, the filter is perfectly clear. I’m not sure where the ball valve for the sump hose is, nor am I sure how to check it.
I will try and gain access to the motor and check for sparking, but it sounds like it is – of course, I’ll visually confirm this too.
The full E-Nr. is: WAS32466GB/10 FD 8712 200760

Attached to the bottom of the tub, easy to access after first removing and inspecting your motor. 💡

Okay, so on [url=http://www.bosch-home.co.uk/store/spareparts/media/pdf/8907396415518?vibki=WAS32466GB/10]this/ diagram, which parts do I need to inspect?
I did mention earlier that I’m not technically minded, hence the need to be told exactly what to look for and do.

We have to assume those asking for help and guidance with their domestic appliances have a fair degree of technical knowledge. In fact it is a prerequisite for many reasons if only for your own personal safety. DIY’ing with no such technical knowledge can be extremely dangerous. Therefore I would advise you seek profession assistance in this case.
I have given enough of my free time to you both willingly and voluntarily. You have sufficient information now within this thread from what I have said to decide what best to do and how best to proceed.
My best regards to you. 😀
