ParticipantI have just installed in our current house the dishwasher which we had in our previous house. It’s an old-ish machine, but scarcely used, and has been stored for the past few years in our garage. The model is Philips Whirlpool ADP 136/7 serial no 9250103217.
All seemed good. Water inlet (it’s cold-fill) and drain outflow clear, electricity supply fine, some juggling to get it into position under the worktop. But when I turned on the power supply (and as I recall had not switched the machine on as it was empty), I’m pretty sure I heard a “pop” from the machine itself, and a very slight electrical-burning smell.
I checked the fused spur, and the fuse in the plug. Both still OK.
So I set the machine to run – empty – on the short ‘prewash’ cycle, and switched on. It ran OK, seemed to pump water in OK, and clicked through what was about a 10-15 min cycle. Some water drained out part-way through the cycle. But when the program ended, there was still about 3″-4″ of water in the bottom of the machine – and it was cold (I am not certain that the prewash heats the water anyway…).
My suspicion is that the ‘pop’ I think I heard earlier might have been the drain-pump and/or the heating circuit, going bang. Are either of these protected by a fuse inside the machine? Or is it now a matter of checking and replacing either or both of these components (if they are still available)?
I have repaired washing machines and tumble driers but have never tackled a dishwasher. Any advice on fault-diagnosis and on exactly what to check and replace would be welcome.

An update…. Some forum members have obviously read my post, but no replies yet. In fact my query looks like it was a false alarm.
In trying out the machine on pre-wash, I may have somehow clicked-through the programme and either interrupted or confused the sequence of filling and emptying.
Having siphoned out the water left inside, I have since run a normal wash cycle with some dishes….. and, hooray, the machine works fine. So whatever I thought I heard earlier, it clearly wasn’t the pump or heater circuit going ‘pop’.
So – fingers crossed that this now almost-vintage machine will continue to operate normally.
