Hi our GE American fridge/freezer (GCE23YETAFBB) has a problem. Over the last couple of years, the freezer has made a racket which has only been stopped for a couple of days when I’ve defrosted it.

Recently is has been suspiciously quiet.

Then about 3 weeks ago I opened the freezer to find food starting to soften (bread and veg etc). I emptied the freezer and did a complete defrost, switched it back on and it started working again.

Then today same thing, bread and ice pops in freezer starting to soften, water dripping down back (as if on defrost cycle). This time though the fridge was also not very cold and no sound from compressors.

I emptied the freezer and by the time I had done that the compressors were back on and the fridge and freezer are cold again.

Does anybody have any idea what the fault could be and is it likely to be an expensive repair? I have a quote for someone to look at it, but I don’t want to waste money if the parts are then going to be expensive and approaching the cost of a new fridge/freezer.

    Many thanks SMB

Is quite probably but, not certainly, the culprit as if memory serves it has a sensor in the loom for it that tends to go and gives you that sort of symptom.

Board, compressor are also possible, the latter unlikely though.

Brian and Bob know more about them than I do though.

    K.
