ParticipantI personally don’t use fabric softener. I did for a year when I first moved out but this year I think I used one cap of the cheaper stuff and decided i preferred the smell of detergent.
Plus I’ve learnt it can fade clothing, and damaged clothing fibres making them age faster.
Which I do believe just from looking at my mother’s clothing.
Sure her stuff smells fantastic and feels really clean and soft but I’d rather have nicer looking clothes and I’m not actually a fan of my stuff being that soft.
Particularly my towels.
Anyone notice how less absorbent towels are when you use a lot of fabric softener?July 19, 2014 at 8:42 pm #416908Martin

My sister in law takes that line and her blooming towels are like cardboard. But, using fabric conditioner increases to the flammability of the fabric and makes them less water absorbent oddly enough. The better alternative to fabric conditioner as far as towels are concerned at least are by using tumble dryer sheets.
As for fading clothing…..that’s a new one on me…..are you sure?
In my household we use both on all types of fabrics with no problems whatsoever. Though we don’t use those highly perfumed top brand detergents (Ariel & Persil) as we can bear the pong! Makes the airing cupboard stink like a scented candle shop, another hate of mine. 😉

Well I suppose the type of powder used can affect fading also but what about heat?
I know too high of a temperature is going to shrink fabrics but does that contribute to colours fading? As for the cardboard feeling, I wouldn’t say its quite that bad, but then I don’t have a tumble dryer so I have to line dry or use a clotheshorse in the winter to dry all of my items.
I’ve even heard some say that fabric softener was a big cause of broken machines.

It’s funny you would put that up because even they agree you shouldn’t use fabric softener on towels.
Should probably read your resources more thoroughly before insinuating I am an idiot lolJuly 19, 2014 at 10:42 pm #416912kwatt

You are correct Ryannn, fabric softener is not especially a good thing.
To be blunt, as one chemist that works on them told me, it’s basically a big bottle of grease with a nice smell.
That means it repels moisture so, absolutely no use and in fact detrimental on both towelling and bedding therefore should be used on neither at the very least.
There is also comment from within the fabric industry that it does shorten the life of garments and damages the fibres, which would give you colour loss.
But, people do spend a lot of money on the stuff. 😉
Heat will not fade colour so long as it is within the range the garment can take, usually determined by the care label (if it’s right) or the fabric type along with whether it is rated as being colourfast or not. Outside of those constraints there should be no issue.

I use the combined detergent and softener tablets and in my hot and cold fill Bosch the results are superb
Using my daughters cold fill Bosch while mine is out of action using same tablets the washing is nowhere near as goodHence no way do I want a cold fill washing machine …….i guess the £400 i paid for my Bosch 16 years ago equates to needing a £1000 Miele now

Great to hear someone agrees,
yes I hear a bunch of stylists say how it makes clothing look dull and isn’t really worth it for the benefits you get of using it.
To be honest unless your drying your clothes/towels on really high in a tumble dryer they shouldn’t feel like cardboard.
But I do actually prefer that rough feeling with a towel.
It gets

I hear from a bunch of stylists it does deteriorate your clothes which I can fully believe in.But even if you were to go over the temperature I can’t really see how heat alone would fade the colour of a garment?
I don’t see how unless your drying your clothes/towels on a very high heat in the tumble dryer that they would come out feeling like cardboard.
Though I have to admit I do actually prefer my towels feeling quite cripsy as it helps to get you fully dry.
A bit like hotel towels.
Saves a lot of time too. And then there is no need to use any baby powder. So you might think a nicer smelling towel works better when in actuality its inability to dry you as well has quite the opposite effect.
