ParticipantHey,
So I know this isn’t particularly a problem or particularly specific to the maintenance of a washing machine but I really feel like I would like to give some advice about stuff I’ve learned since about a year and a half ago when i had to start doing my own laundry.
This is going to be some straight forward tips about clothing care and then I’ll throw in a few washing machine tips I feel that should be added in also.
If you feel there’s anything I have missed or you don’t agree with something then by all means say, I’m up for a debate!First off something simple we can all implement immediately;
Separate your laundry into 3 piles.
Whites, Colours and darks. Now personally to make it easy, I just say blacks and greys are dark. However adjust accordingly.Check the temperature.
Now I know this can be irritating. Some stuff does need a lot higher temperature to wash properly and you don’t want to do extra loads.
For me I have some garments they are a 30, and I will actually do them on a 40 degree wash, but anything else I’m not gonna go any higher than 40 on if it isn’t supposed to be.
Again its your call. 10 degrees over doesnt seem too bad to me and it hasn’t shrunk any of my stuff that should be on 30, so i’m happy with it.
But generally i do recommend you stick to the garments recommend temperature or go lower. nothing wrong with going lower unless its dirty.Have you selected the correct programme cycle?
This one I find particularly interesting.
It’s amazing to me, how I have noticed people wash everything on a cotton cycle.
No matter what the material is. So you may think is this really an issue? well yes and no, do you care what your clothing looks like?
If you want your clothes to look the best they can and last for a years and years without looking older you really do need to wash on the correct programme.
Cottons can really take a beating and generally if you watch a load on a cotton cycle the machine really will give that load a damn good thrashing.
Not all you clothes want or even need that to get clean.
Do yourself a favour, check if you have a mixed load and a mixed load/synthentics programme be sure to use it to keep jeans, poly blend items etc. looking great. It will help prevent bobbling too.Quick one. Use Colour detergent for any coloured/dark items. Why? Colour detergents don’t contain bleach which is what causes fading and ages a garment. But use the normal stuff with bleach for whites to keep them looking sparkly white.
fabric softener.
Avoid it like the plague. Now I know a lot of people aren’t gonna agree with me but a lot stylists do agree that softener ages clothing, isn’t good the fibers, it coats it with a kind of waxy layer surface and there’s just something I don’t like about my clothing have that dropped in during the rinse cycle.
Also towels.
Even if you decide to keep using it on your clothes, if you wash your towels separately I highly recommend not using it. Even after the first wash or two if you have never washed them without fabric softener you will notice a incredible difference in the absorbancy,
you get dryer easier which ultimately means you smell better for longer after a shower.clean your washing machine.
clean the detergent drawer regularly.
Check the door seal.
Do your monthly maintenance wash with bio powder on highest tempt.
If your washer is clean, Your clothes are going to be cleaner. Simple.
Also this prevents mould, and who doesn’t want that?Powder Vs liquid?
I’m still mixed about this one myself.
However I will say powder cleans better every time.
I still can’t decide between powders made for colours vs liquidtabs or liquids for which causes less fading. I’m sure a liquid causes less but maybe I’m wrong.
I’ll leave this one to people with more experience.
And thats it.
That’s all I can really think of for now.
If anyone wants to add anything or argue about stuff please do.
Thanks -
