ParticipantHi All, I’ve got an indesit TLA 1S, which was installed as part of a new build house two years ago.
The top of the fridge is warmer than the bottom. The top is 8degrees, the bottom around 3. I pulled it out and noticed that when the compressor is on, or has been on, the casing is red hot.. too hot to touch.
There is an even distribution of light frost on the back wall of the fridge.Assume this isn’t normal? Do I have a problem?
Thanks for any help in advance.July 29, 2014 at 9:31 pm #417270adibranch

can anyone answer this before I go out and buy a new fridge? Is a red hot compressor normal? Is the top 5 degrees hotter than the bottom normal?
I just turned it off for 24 hours to see if there was an ice blockage .. switched it back and and within an hour the compressor is red hot again. I think its working fine, s I can feel vibration as if something is spinning.. its just red hot to touch.
Thans.

It sounds as if the compressor is pumping weak, hard to say for sure remotely but it sounds like it.
So, either a replacement compressor at about £150-200 or so or, a new unit.

lack of gas could also cause this? The reason I ask is that one of the joins looks a bit iffy.. looks like it has potential to leak to me ..

A lack of gas, on most modern refrigeration, will cause the machine not to cool at all in a pretty short space of time. There’s only a few grams to a few hundred grams of gas in them so it doesn’t take very long before that disappears.
That’s just a brazed joint on the charging stub of the compressor by the looks of it and looks okay.

ah okay.. but lack of gas wouldn’t cause the overheating of the compressor?

If the gas goes, it will not cool at all and the compressor would likely cut out in short order.
