ParticipantGood evening all, I hope someone may kindly assist me with an oven issue that one of my clients is having?
First of all, I am not a domestic appliance engineer and neither do I pretend to be. I did explain to my client that this is not my area of expertise and they still asked me to assist. As I have done work for them on numerous occasions I reluctantly agreed to take a look.
A week ago the main oven on their dual fuel cooker (gas hobs/ electric ovens) ceased to work. On investigation the rotary timer that winds back as the time passes is very broken. It rotates clockwise and on releasing it immediately flings back to the starting position or beyond.
Secondly, after gaining access to the back of the selector knob their appears to be scorching to the plastic enclosure.
After viewing other threads briefly I have noticed these parts seem to be priced quite high. I have based my opinion on the cost I have seen for a timer and a selector and compared to what it may cost to replace the cooker? They have also mentioned that the secondary oven does not get as hot as they think it should so I suspect the element has become weak (also noticed the lamp is not operating on this oven too)
The client has explained that they’re not interested in having an operational timer so am I correct in presuming this could easily be bypassed simply by appropriately connecting the line and neutral conductors on the in/out side on the back of the timer?
Whilst I did not want to go poking around too much I was able to determine that there was power going to the selector and also on moving the selector power was being transferred to various connectors on the selector but nothing inside the main oven was operating.
I have read of issues indicating a timer being knocked onto auto but as I am getting power at the selector does this mean that this timer does not have this function?
I hope all the information has been relayed in a way that makes sense? It made perfect sense in my mind but I hope that sense has not been lost on it’s journey between brain and fingertips 🙂
I would very much appreciate any assistance offered.
Kind regards
Steve Palmer

Hi
This model was originally made by Lofra. BY pass the mechanical timer which if an electrically competent you should be able to do. Also check for a thermal cut out. Also check that the selector switch contacts haven’t burnt out.

Thanks for your reply Bryan 🙂
Where is the thermal cutout likely to be please?
As I mentioned, I have tested and confirmed that power is getting to the selector.
I’m wondering if I strip down the oven and bypass the selector and take power directly to each function I will be able to confirm a faulty selector? There is a scorch mark on the side of the selector housing (inside the oven)
I did try to post a picture but I am not sure how to make the photo smaller.
Kind regards
Steve.

The clockwork timer acts like a fuse to function. When engages it allows power through it until it counts down to 0 them it interrupts the supply causing the oven to shut down.
If it is broken you will need to either replace it or bypass it. Bypassing the timer is not as straight forward as joining the wires together, but if you are familiar with the circuit it should be straight forward.
The selector switch on these are known to be problematic. Any sign of burning or scorching on the terminals or casing of the switch is a very good indicator it has failed.
There are two versions, 1 has 9 positions the other has 10. If it the 10 position switch check to see if it has been modified. Old ones which need modifying are white in colour. If it’s a white switch you will need the wiring diagram as well to convert it.
Modified units have a brown housing, these are the only ones now available and are a straight swap over.
The TOC (Lofra call it a Klixon) is located bottom left rear of the chassis, not all units had them fitted at the factory. It is basically a thermal fuse and trips when the cabinet temp reaches 180 Deg IIRC.
Good luck

Jackal, thanks for your help.
The selector enclosure is white in colour and definitely has a very visible scorch mark on the outer casing.
As I mentioned in my opening post, I did explain to my client that this is not my area of expertise. If things need modifying then I will need to advise them to have an appliance engineer take over as I am sure my Insurances will not cover this type of work. Also, with the cost of the parts being so high I’m not prepared to start guessing and just replacing parts using trial and error.
Thanks again for the helpful posts 🙂

Today I went back to my clients property and removed the top and rear of the cooker to see if I could perform a few more tests that would give a clearer indication of where the fault lies.
I took a number of photos with my camera this time and took additional notes. I think I have pin pointed the fault to be the selector unit which would make sense given the obvious scorch mark on the outer casing.
Firstly I tested for continuity between terminals 1 – 2 and 3 – 4 on the back of the timer (with cables removed) This was proven.
Then, with my continuity tester wedged in place on terminals 1 – 2 (continuity present) I rotated the timer dial clockwise, there was a click and loss of continuity just as the timed markings were reached. I continued to slowly rotate the dial and continuity returned. This was repeated for terminals 3 – 4 also and the results were the same.
On energising the appliance and carefully testing at the various elements etc I found Live present but no Neutral.
I isolated the appliance and traced all cables on the selector. Once confident I knew what cable was going where I removed the Neural connector positioned in port 11 of the selector and joined it with the Neutral connector in 11a.
I ensured that all the functions were set at 0 and energised the appliance again. I slowly worked selected each function and was happy to see that everything was working and heating up.
All I need now is to have it confirmed that this does prove the fault lies with the selector and that by replacing this the oven will be back to full working order?
I showed the client my findings and explained that I was putting everything back as it was until I had sought confirmation from an engineer.
I have included the various photos that I took today. Maybe someone else will find them useful in the future?
I look forward to any replies that may help me further.
Kind regards
Steve 🙂

I hope your getting paid by the hour, all that work for a fault any apprentice on day 2 of college could have found.

It is a very obvious fault.

Have you taken the time to read this thread in it’s entirity?
I have frequented forums and moderated forums for many years and I quickly leaned that if someone didn’t have something constructive to add to a thread then they should just click next and see if they can help someone else.
I am a strong believer of “knowing your limitations”.
I don’t jump into something two footed especially when it has the potential to kill or at the very least seriously injure someone.
I am a Part P Approved Contractor. My area of expertise is electrical installations, it is NOT working with domestic appliances. If I thought I knew it all then I would not be here asking politely for assistance. I have not just asked “what is the problem”? I have tried to add some suggestions along the way, I have taken the time to add as much information as possible including a descriptive thread title to draw attention to future searchers who may have similar issues. I have also taken the time to post a number of photos that can be saved and posted by others IF they feel that would be helpful?
I don’t often bite, hence my last reply to your post BUT you do come across as being a complete prize plonker and I am actually starting to question whether you know the answer at all? :rotfl:
I hope you have a very lovely weekend and don’t feel the need to bless this thread with your presence again.
Much Love, Steve 😀 😀 :rotfl:

Your conclusion that lee8 as being a “prize plonker” is spot on. He rarely posts in the public forums but frequently pollutes the trade forums with his rude and acerbic one liners.
Back on topic, and wading through your 32 photos, then the scorched selector switch has got to be the faulty component.

Martin, I really appreciate your confirmation, as I mentioned in my opening post I reluctantly agreed to take a look at the cooker only because this was a client who I continually do work for. I did inform them that this is work that I do not carry out and I advised they employ the expertise of a domestic appliance engineer but they really wanted me to see if I could help… Perhaps they have had previous dealings with engineers like Lee? Lol
Thanks again everyone, I hope you all enjoy your weekend 🙂
