I think this topic has been covered already but the BBC have just picked up on it.

Listened to a phone in on the subject on radio 2, usual selection of nutters panicking about not being able to use their existing ‘Hoovers’ after the reduced wattage law comes into force.
Reminded me of the Y2K nonsense 14 years ago.
You do have to wonder how well a 900w machine can work though, more bloody Euro meddling :rolls:

I’ve got a cylinder Goblin from the 60s, 350 watts and it knocks spots off my Dyson DC01 which isn’t used much, mind you the motor is the size of a front loader motor and very quiet too. 😆

Asking what may seem somewhat obvious but…

What difference will this limit make?

I mean, other than a media frenzy getting going whipping up more anti-EU sentiment and permitting the tabloids to print yards of rhetoric.

And, as robbra rightly points out, why does anyone need an uber-powerful vac anyway, we’ve done well enough for about a century with less and, to my knowledge, to no ill effect. In fact, many of the old vacs such as the Juniors are still treasured and sought after, hardly powerful but efficient enough and far, far more durable let alone repairable than the cr*p we have today.

completely off topic but there is a similar Euro directive controlling the emissions and power of new railway locomotives built after 2014 which has led to a) a whole heap of last minute orders for current locomotives shortly to be outlawed (to make- not use) and b) all those old preserved or stored smokey diesel engines being hurriedly re instated to be used hauling freight up and down the country soon. Great for us train enthusiasts but not exactly what was intended by the EU.

It’s the first time I can recall the EU has enforced such an order. It will have a knock on effect toward the appliance manufacturing business. The days of bigger, faster, more powerful, have been well and truly nipped in the bud.

The next generation of vacs will be far more efficient as a result. It is hoped that in the not too distant they will figure that the modern washing machine and tumble dryer draw too much energy with their 2 to 3 hour basic wash cycles. And that frost free fridge freezers have running cycles far too long based on their inability to perform. 2kw Infra-red oven elements will be banned and low energy glass/ceramic elements take over.

Who knows what next, we can only imagine. 🙁

Apparently it’s a cross European thing, all member states have agreed to it…

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29006780

And yes, it looks as if more devices will be affected as well.

If it were me though, were I a policy maker, I wouldn’t have banned them.

The economist in me would simply think to let people buy them if they want and simply levy a hefty tax on the energy guzzling devices in much the same way as is done with gas guzzling cars. Everyone understands it and accepts that if they want more “poooowwweerrr” as they say on TG, then you gotta stump up for that.

So in some respects, this is more unilateral as the people that are perhaps well heeled can’t just say “sod it” and go buy a bigger, faster thing than we mere peasants can and, the peasants are stuck with the same as the more affluent.

But all you guys that recon vacs… bet you’re about to up the prices on the powerful recons you have and, if not, you’re daft given that the media have just created a (not so much) black (more grey) market for you with their reporting. 😉

Manufacturers meanwhile are forced to look to efficiency over brute force in order to comply.
