We have a Bosch dishwasher SMI53M15GB44. Recently the water has not been heating up, and at the end of the cycle it is showing error code E:09.

Info on the web says that E:09 indicates a heater failure. I am therefore trying to figure out if it is the heater that has failed, or the control circuit.

I am having trouble figuring out the wiring of the heater, which is part of a combined heat-pump unit (P/N 00651956). I believe that the connections to the heater are two red wires (2 x Live) and one yellow / green (Earth). The resistance between the two red wires is very high, rapidly moving to off-scale when checking with a multimeter.

When the dishwasher is running, at no point is there any voltage between these two red wires or relative to earth.

I am therefore not sure whether it is the heater that has failed open circuit, or that the controller is not swithing on the power to the heater. Alernatively it may be that I don’t understand the wiring.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Philip

Re: Bosch Dishwasher Heat Pump Failure?

i dont know thw wiring colours of this machine but provided you have correctly identified the wires you should get a voltage to earth on one of them at some point.
you have to be aware that the machine only heats at some stages in the cycle. select the shortest programme close the soap dispenser and after the programme starts listen for the draw opening. you can then be sure the machine is due to heat.
we get a lot of problems with bad solder joints on the board on heater relays, so it worth a look. trace the heater wires back to the board so you know where to look and look at the solder joints around relays.

hope it helps but not had this problem on this model yet

Check spray arms, if blocked or restricted this model sensitive to running low water level. The top spray arm tends to get blocked like this

Thanks for all the replies to my post.

The NTC wiring in the diagram that Martin posted is the same as mine, and the resistances look good. While there is one less heater terminal on mine, I am now sure that the heater itself has blown.

Still trying to figure out why I don’t see a voltage on the connector during the wash cycle. I have had the control PCB out, and there is nothing obviously wrong with relays or soldering.

I’ll order up a spare heat-pump, and hope that I don’t have to buy a new controller as well!

As you are aware no doubt, with electronics, unless they detect a complete circuit the microprocessor says NO! The relay on the board can’t close but instead the microprocessor flags up E:09. (Heat pump fault). That at least would indicate that the power board is most probably not the issue in this case.

But knowing these crappy machines as I do, NEVER rule anything out. 😉

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi Carrp, i saw your post today, i have the same issue with yours, dishwasher not heating up the water, even though it can complete the wash cycle.

The heat pump is the same model as yours also I only see 6 pings on the heat pump. And not on any two of them return a resistance reading. How did you identify heat pump was an issue?

When you install the new one, did dish washer automatically recognize it after you plug in the heat pump?

Saw you post on 2013, how long does it last after you change heat pump?

    Thanks
    Tommy
