Zanussi FJS1425W stops randomly for no apparent reason.

The machine always starts, and gets so many minutes into the cycle and then freezes. For instance on rinse cycle programmed at 56 minutes, stops after 8 minutes in the middle of rinsing. Sometimes the timer is reset to the full cycle time. Pause/Skip allows skip to next part of cycle, but the machine will not restart, with the pause light just blinking all the time. Only solution is to switch off and start again. If most of the part-cycle was done, could skip to next part and so eventually get a good wash.

Stored last fault code is always E52 (No tacho signal), yet the motor is working perfectly, with good brushes (replaced just a few years ago along with new bearings) and visually mechanically sound Tachometer. Discounted a faulty earth leak heater (a common cause reported on forums), since fault occurs independently of the heating.

The problem was getting progressively worse until restarting the machine no longer easily got a decent wash. Would not even complete the relatively simple spin cycle. So checked all wiring and motor, and all looks clean. Took apart the control module box and checked all sockets, and all looked clean. Cleaned off a lot of carbon build up on the PCB.

On reassembly, machine has worked perfectly for a month or so. However the problem has now reappeared.

    Any ideas?

Requires new brushes fitted i’d imagine, needs motor checked, armature cleaned, loom inspected, tacho inspected, p.c.b inspected.

Seamy: As stated in the original post, had already done everything you suggest – and the machine worked OK for a while. It is steadily getting worse, so whatever the fault is, I did not find it.

What I was looking for was whether anyone has experienced this sort of problem, either with this or similar models, or with the pcb, which I know is/was used in many different machines by many different manufacturers. Such as specific problems with the loom, including all the push fit terminals, due to age degradation. This would lend some focus to my investigations, since I cannot find any signs of wear and tear – but then although I have a lifetime of experience repairing household appliances, very few have been washing machines so I could easily be missing something. Is it possible that there really is a fault with the pcb? It is a lot of money to spend if it proves not to be the case.

We all would have encountered problems like this i’m sure, its from my experience that i’ve advised the above.

An E52 error code means there is no feedback received by P.C.B when supply has been on to motor, it can be thrown up for any manner of reasons on these, it can be down to slight earth faults, usually stemming from heater or motor, carbon dust on loom of motor can also cause it. I have even found dust build up on the p.c.b to trigger erroneous faults.
Clean with a dry delicate brush & see if it cures it.
If motor runs & stops after a time, it would seem as theres a motor problem, there could be a bad segment in the armature, it could be going out on thermal overload if motor gets hot or motor connections could be poor, easy solution is to plug in another motor & try it, thats if you have another handy.
    Best of luck with it.
