ParticipantI’ve had some building work at home: the washing machine has now been plumbed back in and no longer works. The machine is a Whirlpool AWO/D4505: it’s at least 5 years old.
The machine appears fine when plugged in, plumbed and turned on. I select a cycle and push ‘Start’: the machine makes an unpleasant grumble for a few seconds before the red Maintenance light comes on. I’ve tried both washing and drain-only cycles.
I’ve checked the water supply and the filter. I’ve also removed the motor and checked the resistance of the three circuits: they appear to be fine.
The machine has been moved around several times during the building works, and may have been exposed to dust. Does this give some useful clues to the source of the problem?

No clues there I’m afraid. Check the heater, a wire may have come off? 💡

I’ve done some further research this evening. I made a mistake in my previous post: I had not properly tested all the cycles. I’ve been able to reset the machine and filled it with water: the Drain program works fine. I’ve isolated the problem to the water inlet: the hose and filter are fine but there’s no water coming through the valve.
I’ve performed a continuity test on the solenoid: my testing machine does not have an ohm-meter, but, but it indicates clearly that the circuit is intact. This makes me think the problem is either in the valve itself, or something in the main electric circuitry.
NB It’s the red ‘Maintenaince’ light that’s illuminated, suggesting an electrical fault. The ‘Water tap closed’ light is not illuminated.
So I have three questions:
1) Is there a test that would distinguish between a physical problem in the valve and the main circuitry?
2) Is it worth shelling out £27 for a new valve and solenoid, given that I’m only half-convinced?
3) is there anything else I should check?Best wishes, Nick

1) Only by check for 240 at the valve
2) But it worked before the building work so don’t waste you money just yet.
3) I did suggest checking the heater earlier 😉What you may not fully appreciate is that the modern washing machine ‘interrogates’ it’s own circuitry before it starts a cycle. If a wire is off or any component (heater, motor, pump, valve etc) are not connected then the ‘Maintenance LED’ warns the user a fault has been detected. It is only natural to assume because it isn’t filling the fault lies there but that might not necessarily be the case!

Okay. I checked the heater and it appears to be fine (connected up, circuit is closed).
I can’t detect any voltage in the cable leading to the valve – it appears to be dead. This would imply a problem with the main control panel, which I guess is a specialist job to fix.
I’m ready to give up and buy a new machine now.

You could try the pressure switch system next 💡
